Records exist of khayamiya tents specifically made for European travelers and archaeologists, such as Max von Oppenheim’s 1893 tent used at the Tell Halaf expedition in 1929, or the anonymous travelers depicted in Palestine from the collection of the Library of Congress (fig. 13).18 Some of these were fixed in place as venues for photographs and meals, such as the record of Rosicrucians visiting the Giza Pyramids (also in 1929), or the souvenir from the Khomais restaurant (once located at 8 26th July Street), which depicts two tired tourists seated before an appliquéd mahmal procession to Mecca led by riders on camels and a donkey.19
