"You're here!"
I raised an eyebrow at Lizzie, who was very nearly bouncing in the doorway. "Were you expecting me to not be here?"
She had probably expected me to cancel or ghost her, which was just depressing. Lizzie was sunshine and joy with an added bonus of pretty to look at; why would you ghost that? People sucked.
"No! Of course I was expecting you! Or are you early? It's four, right?" She pulled her phone out of her pocket, frowning as she turned on the screen.
"No, it's four." Well, it was 3:55, but that was close enough to count as four and not obscenely early. If I hadn't been on the phone with my mom until half an hour ago, I probably would have been obscenely early. I was way too into Lizzie to do things like be casually on time.
"I may have lost track of time. Sorry. Did you want to come in?"
Nah, I'll just hang out on your porch in the snow. Trying not to make that face out loud, I smiled and tromped past her into a small tiled...nook? Foyer? I mentally shrugged at my lack of vocabulary and looked around.
It was a small, tidy space that opened into a hallway, a staircase, and what was probably the living room. A pile of shoes attempted to be tidy behind the door. A coatrack held a wild assortment of feminine winter gear and guarded four pairs of snow boots.
I eyed the snow boots, amused, and wondered which of the two women had multiple pairs. Since the colors were gray, burgundy, neon blue, and a dark lime green I was betting at least two pairs were Lizzie's. My girl did like a bit of color.
Lizzie caught me eyeing the boots and shrugged, smiling a little. "They were pretty."
I grinned. "Those blue ones just screamed your name, didn't they?"
"They were on sale. End of season, fifty percent off. It would have been a crime to leave them." She grinned at me, pleased. "You can leave your stuff on the coatrack if you want."
I wanted. I dropped my bag on a dry bit of floor and got rid of my layers and my dirty boots.
Lizzie held out my bag, which she had snatched off the floor almost as soon as I had put it down. "Do you want snacks?"
"Snacks are always good." I wondered idly what Lizzie would come up with. She seemed like the type of person that was equally likely to present hummus with whole grain crackers or ice cream with all the toppings.
"Aunt Merry should be home not too late," Lizzie told me as she led me down the short hall and into what turned out to be a compact but functional kitchen. There was one of those counter islands, raised on one side, that looked perfect for sitting and hassling the cook. "She wound up having to go into work today because there was a callout, so dinner will be a little late."
"That's fine," I told her, happy for an excuse to spend more time with her.
