He’d been worried, but the two scruffians never reappeared. He started driving back late Monday morning, in no rush. Things seemed to be better than ever with Hannah. Not just the sex—but definitely the sex too—but everything. Maybe it was just because he was more relaxed around her. He didn’t have to hide so much. And maybe she was happier that she knew some of his secrets. He wasn’t sure. Girls had always been most of a mystery to him. But she still thought his name was Kelly. He wasn’t sure what to do about that, if anything. He should tell her his real name if they were going to have a future together. But who knew if that was going to happen? He had no idea what was going on in her head most of the time. He still didn’t know what she saw in him. The fact that she hadn’t run off when she found out he’d been keeping some pretty important secrets from her mystified him.

She had her bare feet up on the dash as he motored south, the tinted shade rolled halfway down the big windshield to protect him from the sun. After ignoring it for most of the weekend, she was on her phone, scrolling.

He kept glancing over at her. She was in a t-shirt and shorts. Eighties-style short shorts were back in fashion, and her legs went on forever. He could see just the bottom curve of her butt cheek. He didn’t know who was in charge of women’s fashion, but men everywhere owed them a favor—first it was yoga pants, where panty lines were discouraged, and now short shorts were back in fashion.

She saw him looking at her. “What are you smiling about? Keep your eyes on the road, buddy.”

She was going to be graduating in less than two months. They hadn’t talked much about her plans after that. He was afraid to. Especially after all the revelations this trip. “Yes ma’am, sorry.”

“Ugh. Don’t call me ma’am. Makes me feel old.” She kept scrolling through her phone. “Wow.” She shook her head. “Have you seen the news today? I guess the shit really hit the fan over the weekend.”

“Really,” he said, his voice neutral. “About what?”
