Chapter Twenty-Four

I’m having a dream, but I can’t remember it. Maddy’s in it, and Bron, and a cluster of guys with bright red eyes and ugly gray faces, but every time I try to focus on them, they fade away. My mouth tastes like I’ve spent the last several hours chewing dirty socks.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, I know there’s something I’m supposed to remember. Something about what happened tonight. Something about Bron. Something about—

I jerk up, gasping, as it all rushes back to me: the house, the party, the purple stuff changing to brown, the hideous, dying people—

Bron! Where’s Bron?

“Easy, man,” says a voice. “You’re safe.”

I’m lying on a bed in a dimly lit room. I’m still wearing my clothes, except somebody’s taken off my jacket, tie, and shoes. There’s a shadowy figure sitting in a chair next to the bed.

I try to leap off the bed, but get pulled up short by a padded handcuff around my right wrist that nearly yanks my arm out of its socket. “What the hell?” I gasp, rubbing my shoulder. “Let me go!”

Oh, shit, did those red-eyed guys catch me? Is that what this is about?

“Calm down,” the guy says. He flips the switch on a lamp on the nightstand, bathing the room in light.

I get a better look at him now: he’s a little shorter and wider than me, dressed in slacks and a polo shirt. I figure he’s got a few years on me at most. He looks relaxed, and best of all, his eyes aren’t glowing red.

“What the hell, calm down?” I demand. “How am I supposed to calm down when you’ve got me chained to a damn bed? What do you want? Why am I here? Where’s my friend?”

The guy chuckles. “Shit, man, you have a lot of questions. Like I said, take it easy. We need to talk. The cuff is just to keep you in one place while we do it.”

“You can’t just—you know—ask me?”

He shrugs. “You were pretty freaked out back at that party. It’s safer this way.”

“You would have been too if you saw what I did!” I pull on the cuff again, not as hard this time. My arm still hurts from last time. “Who are you? How did you get me out of there? Why did you get me out of there? And where’s my friend?” My heart pounds as I think of Bron again. We got separated, and I have no idea where she ended up. Did she get out? Did she trip and get trampled? Did the cops get her?

The guy offers me a bottle of water. “Here, drink this. It’ll make you feel better. And I can get you something to eat if you want.”

I glare at the bottle. “Yeah, no. I’m not touching anything I have to put in my mouth. Not after what I saw. Are you working for those guys?”

“What guys?”

“The ones with the red eyes. The ones who were handing out that purple
