Chapter Twenty-Four
Iâm having a dream, but I canât remember it. Maddyâs in it, and Bron, and a cluster of guys with bright red eyes and ugly gray faces, but every time I try to focus on them, they fade away. My mouth tastes like Iâve spent the last several hours chewing dirty socks.
Somewhere in the back of my mind, I know thereâs something Iâm supposed to remember. Something about what happened tonight. Something about Bron. Something aboutâ
I jerk up, gasping, as it all rushes back to me: the house, the party, the purple stuff changing to brown, the hideous, dying peopleâ
Bron! Whereâs Bron?
âEasy, man,â says a voice. âYouâre safe.â
Iâm lying on a bed in a dimly lit room. Iâm still wearing my clothes, except somebodyâs taken off my jacket, tie, and shoes. Thereâs a shadowy figure sitting in a chair next to the bed.
I try to leap off the bed, but get pulled up short by a padded handcuff around my right wrist that nearly yanks my arm out of its socket. âWhat the hell?â I gasp, rubbing my shoulder. âLet me go!â
Oh, shit, did those red-eyed guys catch me? Is that what this is about?
âCalm down,â the guy says. He flips the switch on a lamp on the nightstand, bathing the room in light.
I get a better look at him now: heâs a little shorter and wider than me, dressed in slacks and a polo shirt. I figure heâs got a few years on me at most. He looks relaxed, and best of all, his eyes arenât glowing red.
âWhat the hell, calm down?â I demand. âHow am I supposed to calm down when youâve got me chained to a damn bed? What do you want? Why am I here? Whereâs my friend?â
The guy chuckles. âShit, man, you have a lot of questions. Like I said, take it easy. We need to talk. The cuff is just to keep you in one place while we do it.â
âYou canât justâyou knowâask me?â
He shrugs. âYou were pretty freaked out back at that party. Itâs safer this way.â
âYou would have been too if you saw what I did!â I pull on the cuff again, not as hard this time. My arm still hurts from last time. âWho are you? How did you get me out of there? Why did you get me out of there? And whereâs my friend?â My heart pounds as I think of Bron again. We got separated, and I have no idea where she ended up. Did she get out? Did she trip and get trampled? Did the cops get her?
The guy offers me a bottle of water. âHere, drink this. Itâll make you feel better. And I can get you something to eat if you want.â
I glare at the bottle. âYeah, no. Iâm not touching anything I have to put in my mouth. Not after what I saw. Are you working for those guys?â
âWhat guys?â
âThe ones with the red eyes. The ones who were handing out that purple
