“Haven’t you heard any of the stories about evil snow spirits?” Mika asked in a melodramatically menacing voice.

Tasha thought about all the stories Grandpa had told her, then shook her head.

“Shall I tell one as we skate to the holly tree?” Mika swooped round Tasha and Klara in a circle.

“As long as Tasha doesn’t mind scary stories.” Klara looked at Tasha. “What do you think? Shall we let him tell a story, and we can try skating side by side?”

Tasha nodded and Klara slowed, let go of one of Tasha’s hands and slid beside her. Tasha beamed. She hadn’t wobbled at all. In fact, she felt quietly confident that, if Klara were to let go of her, she could skate on her own. But it was nice having Klara beside her, as Mika, skating around them, began to tell his story.
