A few minutes later, Dale was back on the street, with Poole, by a well-used Ford Pinto. The driver door was open, the engine was running, and a tape player was plugged into the cigarette lighter. Poole pressed play.

A woman’s voice. In hysterics.

No, please. Please!! Stop!

And then there was a scream. It was so sudden and so disturbing that Dale instantly brought a fist to his mouth, bit down on his index finger. The scream tore through the interior of the Pinto, and Poole rushed to turn down the volume, avoiding attention from tourists on the street.

I swear, the woman’s voice continued. It wasn’t me. A pause. What? Why would I say that? Another anguished, shrieking scream. Okay, okay!! He was sacrilegious! I can say that, but I don’t believe it, and I wasn’t—

She stopped, suddenly, mid sentence. But there wasn’t a scream this time. There was a bang, sounds of a struggle. Gurgling. Scratching. And a thump. A few more shuffling sounds, close to the microphone, causing distortion. More shuffling. Someone had picked up whatever device had recorded the event.

And then the recording went silent.

Poole stopped the player. He pulled himself from the car, shut the door, and stood closer to Dale. He wiped his sweaty brow then shoved his hands in his pockets.

“That was Maxine Eckley. They found her yesterday morning up in the hills over there,” Poole said, pulling his right hand from his pocket to point at the rugged hills beyond, which were dotted with trailers and houses. “Asphyxiation. Contusions to the throat. The killer left the tape in her pocket.”

“And Tom Haldiman?”

Poole took in a long breath and looked away from Dale, down Route 66. “We’re going to meet up with a Mohave County deputy in a few minutes, a Deputy Fogarty. They still have Haldiman at the crime scene. Up in one of the trailers.”

He pointed toward the hills again.

“Were they brought out here? Eckley and Haldiman? Or did they both happen to live in this tiny town?”

“I was wondering the same thing,” Poole said. “That’s why I was thinking we should stop by the post office.”
