Chapter 30

“Ihave been chosen by God with the kiss of the Phoenix!” Fable was standing, her eyes looked wild, her loose clothing flowed all around her highlighting the tattoos that curled all along her body.

The Maji stood calmly with a look of steel in his face, his green eyes did not break contact with Fable’s.

“Yet you neglect your calling by becoming a Gypsy!”

Emma could hear Fable’s fury across the room at the man’s presumptuous statement. Tallulah, who sat next to her, leaned down and mumbled, “I’m betting thirty silver that his wife left him to become a gypsy.”

Emma gave a weak smile at the jab. Elijah was rude, opinionated, and caused many arguments, but he was also extremely knowledgeable. Even in the weeks’ time they’d been holding daily meetings, he’d seen to point out large holes in their magical strategies. He seemed to have immense knowledge about the Rusalka’s magical ways. She leaned over to Tallulah, “What’s his story?” she asked.

The woman shook her head, “No one knows; he’s extremely private.”

Emma bit her lip as the volume rose.

“You scoundrel! You know nothing of me! My people abandoned me, petrified of my magic!”

“Have you not heard the prophecies!” the Maji returned.

Fable winced at that, and Emma rose. Weariness hung on her bones, every day for the last week had ended in chaos. Every day the Maji picked a fight with one of the Gypsies, or Igor. The only one he hadn’t picked a fight with was Charlene. Though even Emma knew that was because Charlene was a Mage herself.

With a disgruntled huff, she stepped out of the cottage whose door always sat open. The cool air greeted her. Winter came later to The Dessert than the Plains, but she could feel it coming with the brisk wind, and the trees that were beginning to howl.

“You can’t stand it either?” a gruff voice asked.

Emma jumped, looking to her left to find Igor standing there watching the trees and the sky. She chuckled at her own jumpiness, “It was getting to heated for me.”

Igor smiled, but his face quickly settled as he said, “Why do we argue magical strategy, when my brother creeps ever closer? It feels futile.”

“I wonder why we bother with politics at all, it only seems to make people angry.”

Igor chuckled at that one. She moved to his side and began watching the skyline, “If you don’t mind me asking, what is your purpose here besides convincing Elijah of something he already knew?”

Igor seemed to shift uncomfortably, “I believe it’s a test, to test my loyalty to my word.” He continued to study the horizon, “They hide their fear well, but they fear me; even Charlene.” There was a beat of silence and Emma watched as his face darken, “As well as they should fear me.”

She said nothing, and Igor continued.

“I can’t explain to you the turn of events my life has taken, but I can tell you,” he looked at her, focused on her, “that my brother is a menace that needs to be destroyed.
