Twenty-Four

After a day on the phones talking with supporters, reporters, and media distorters, Brad felt a bit like Doctor Seuss. Or rather, a victim of the Cat in the Hat. The more Eric and Stan tried to adjust his schedule, the more he felt as if he was trying to stay on that big red ball, balancing everything in the campaign on top of his umbrella. Pretty soon, that fish would be out of its bowl and floundering on the floor.

“Brad, your office called. They have papers you have to sign if you want to finalize the deal with Walmart.”

He nodded. At the moment, he didn’t need another distraction, but he couldn’t ignore the multi-million dollar deal they’d negotiated with the retail chain. He’d be able to add 200 new jobs in his company, not that such news would offset the cries from the left about his new ties to the evil Arkansas corporation.

As the afternoon ended, Brad stopped by his corporate office to sign that contract. He walked through the building, stopping a dozen times to talk with employees, as was his habit. The sixth such stop caught his attention.

The graphics team in the marketing division tried to hide what they were doing as they caught wind of his approach. They weren’t fast enough.

“Hey, what’s up? You folks look like four-year-olds who just got caught by mom with your hands in the cookie jar.” He laughed. “What’s that, Cindy?”

He pointed to a stack of what appeared to be two-by-three-foot posters that one artist, Cindy Dye, was in the hurried process of stashing under a table as he walked in.

Cindy was a dyed-in-the-wool Carolina Blue-blood. Pun intended. The fact that she rooted for the wrong team in the Atlantic Coast Conference didn’t minimize her talent. She had a way with colors that extended from her work there to her “hobby” of hybridizing daylilies.

Her face flushed at the question. She did indeed look as if she’d been caught red-handed.

“Oh, that? Nothing, Brad. Really, just a little project we’ve been working on. Probably won’t go anywhere. You don’t need—"

He laughed. “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”

“Shakespeare, right?”

He grinned. “Well, it sure wasn’t Dean Smith or Roy Williams yelling at a Duke cheerleader.” He pointed to the stack. “Care to show me what those are?”

Cindy gave him a wry smile. “Nope.”

The others also shook their heads, or echoed her comment. Brad knew they wouldn’t be doing anything illegal, immoral, or even distasteful, so he almost passed off the group’s behavior. Yet, his curiosity got the better of him, so he walked over to the pile and pulled off the top one.

As he flipped it over, he saw his smiling face and the words, “Brad Graham for President! Bold, fresh, the right man for the job.” He could see Cindy’s touch in the coloring.

The second one read, “Brad Graham for President! A non-politician looking out for you!”

He looked up at the group and raised his brow.

“Really?”

Now, all four of them blushed. Cindy shrugged.

“Might say we’ve been fantasizing a little.
