Maybelle had just slid a final bobby pin into her bun when a knock sounded at the door. She hadnât been expecting anyone and, curious to see who it was, she poked her head out of the bedroom window. A few feet away from the door was Capâs horse, tied to a tree. Fury instantly coursed through her.
She raced down the stairs and flung open the door. âNow what do you want?â
But this time, Cap had flowers, a nice bouquet filled with wildflowers and a red rose in the center. His hair was parted down the center and slicked in both sides. He wore a navy blue vest with a button up a baby blue. Even his gray trousers were so stiff with starch she wondered how he had any room to move freely. Seeing she was speechless, he began with a simple message.
âIâm sorry for what Iâve done, Maybelle,â he said, eyes glistening. âYouâre right. Iâve done you wrong. Majorly wrong. And Iâm here to fix that mistake.â
Maybelle shifted her shocked stare between Capâs face and the flowers. She didnât even know whether to bring them in and put them in water. âI...I...â
âCan I just come in?â Cap asked with urgency in his tone. âI know Leviâs not here. Heâs out chasing the Adams gang.â
âHowâd you know?â
âBecause everyone knows.â He scratched the back of his head. âAre you gonna let me in or...?â
âNo.â
âWhy not? Donât you see here these pretty flowers I brought for you?â
âTheyâre lovely, really,â Maybelle started to say. âBut what youâre doing isnât right either.â
âHow so? Because youâre married to Levi?â
âYes.â
âBut it canât be real between you, is what I think. You and Iâwe were crazy about each other. Donât tell me you donât still feel the same way.â
Maybelle didnât. She couldnât. If anything, sheâd grown closer to confused on the whole matter seeing him standing there in front of her apologizing. She had strong feelings for Levi and it angered her that Cap would dare tempt her in such a fashion.
âYou canât be coming around here like this,â she warned. âHeâs your brother. Why would you ever try to take his wife away?â
âBecause he took you away from me,â Cap said, anger in the underbelly of his words. âHe had his eyes on you the entire time we were courtinâ. And he took his chance whenââ
âWhen you hung me out to dry,â Maybelle interrupted. âSo go on and get out of here. I donât want to see you ever again.â
âYou wonât even take the flowers?â
He looked truly confused.
âNo, I will not take the flowers,â she said. âI donât want them. Go give them to one of those saloon girls you fancy.â
âI donât fancy anyone but you, Maybelle.â
âRight.â
âOf course you wonât believe me.â Cap shook his head. âWhat I did to you was the worst thing in the world. But you still have time to end this marriage sham with Levi. You donât love him anyway.â
âAnd what do you know about what I feel?â Maybelle felt the blood rush into her cheeks.
