Maybelle had just slid a final bobby pin into her bun when a knock sounded at the door. She hadn’t been expecting anyone and, curious to see who it was, she poked her head out of the bedroom window. A few feet away from the door was Cap’s horse, tied to a tree. Fury instantly coursed through her.

She raced down the stairs and flung open the door. “Now what do you want?”

But this time, Cap had flowers, a nice bouquet filled with wildflowers and a red rose in the center. His hair was parted down the center and slicked in both sides. He wore a navy blue vest with a button up a baby blue. Even his gray trousers were so stiff with starch she wondered how he had any room to move freely. Seeing she was speechless, he began with a simple message.

“I’m sorry for what I’ve done, Maybelle,” he said, eyes glistening. “You’re right. I’ve done you wrong. Majorly wrong. And I’m here to fix that mistake.”

Maybelle shifted her shocked stare between Cap’s face and the flowers. She didn’t even know whether to bring them in and put them in water. “I...I...”

“Can I just come in?” Cap asked with urgency in his tone. “I know Levi’s not here. He’s out chasing the Adams gang.”

“How’d you know?”

“Because everyone knows.” He scratched the back of his head. “Are you gonna let me in or...?”

“No.”

“Why not? Don’t you see here these pretty flowers I brought for you?”

“They’re lovely, really,” Maybelle started to say. “But what you’re doing isn’t right either.”

“How so? Because you’re married to Levi?”

“Yes.”

“But it can’t be real between you, is what I think. You and I—we were crazy about each other. Don’t tell me you don’t still feel the same way.”

Maybelle didn’t. She couldn’t. If anything, she’d grown closer to confused on the whole matter seeing him standing there in front of her apologizing. She had strong feelings for Levi and it angered her that Cap would dare tempt her in such a fashion.

“You can’t be coming around here like this,” she warned. “He’s your brother. Why would you ever try to take his wife away?”

“Because he took you away from me,” Cap said, anger in the underbelly of his words. “He had his eyes on you the entire time we were courtin’. And he took his chance when—”

“When you hung me out to dry,” Maybelle interrupted. “So go on and get out of here. I don’t want to see you ever again.”

“You won’t even take the flowers?”

He looked truly confused.

“No, I will not take the flowers,” she said. “I don’t want them. Go give them to one of those saloon girls you fancy.”

“I don’t fancy anyone but you, Maybelle.”

“Right.”

“Of course you won’t believe me.” Cap shook his head. “What I did to you was the worst thing in the world. But you still have time to end this marriage sham with Levi. You don’t love him anyway.”

“And what do you know about what I feel?” Maybelle felt the blood rush into her cheeks.
