While Isaiah plays the leading role in the background to the Beatitudes, it is not surprising that there are also many other texts and underground streams that rise to the surface in Matt. 5:3–12. E.g., several Psalms are evoked at key points, particularly Pss. 1 and 36, but also Pss. 33, 39, and others. H. Benedict Green has particularly highlighted Ps. 119 as part of the background to the Beatitudes in both structure and content (Matthew, Poet, chap. 2). The Beatitudes also call to mind several important characters from Jewish history, including Moses (humble, meek; sees God) and several other prophets, esp. the suffering prophets such as Jeremiah. The connection to prophets who stood for God and suffered at the hands of God’s own covenantal people is strongly highlighted by the tailpiece of this section, Matt. 5:12. After his detailed analysis of the Beatitudes, Green concludes that apart from the phrases “theirs is the kingdom of heaven” and “persecuted for righteousness’ sake,” “every detail of the wording of the Beatitudes has its counterpart somewhere in the LXX text” (Matthew, Poet, 264).
