Chapter Eighteen

JANINE

‘How long have you been collecting these books?’ calls Laura from Janine’s lounge.

‘The gardening books? Since I’ve been here. I found a wonderful place with boxes of second-hand books for as little as sixpence each,’ replies Janine through the arch from the kitchen.

She hurries in. ‘Are you sure this is okay?’

‘Course I am.’

‘It’s just that since Mrs Reid’s fall she can’t manage Bobby, especially now Bobby’s mobile. The garden’s only tiny so I’ll be gone less than two hours, but I don’t like to let her down. She’s very sweet.’

‘We’ll be fine.’

Janine looks over to the couch where Luke is playing with Bobby. She frowns and chews her lip, still undecided.

Laura comes over. ‘Don’t fret,’ she reassures. ‘I know exactly how you feel. The first time I left Luke for more than a few minutes was hard. But Bobby’s fed, changed and happy, and we’ll stay in here, where she’s at home.’

‘No,’ replies Janine, ‘I know she’ll be fine, and do take her next door if you want. There’s a bottle of expressed milk in the fridge and I’ve left a saucepan on the ring. You fill that with water, and put the bottle – yes, of course! Sorry!’

She bends, picks up Bobby, gives her a squeeze and a kiss, and puts her back on the couch. ‘I’ll be back soon,’ she says, and she strides to the front door.
