As he stared into the cold, emotionless eyes of Chris, Oliver had never felt so hopeless in his life. Was it true that Professor Amethyst had given up his location? That Chris had found the Scepter of Fire in his office?

Why had the headmaster split him and Esther up and sent them on dual quest for an object that had been in his possession all along? He simply could not believe Professor Amethyst had misplaced the scepter or forgotten it had been there all along. He was the greatest seer of all time. He could only have deliberately chosen to send Oliver away in the wrong direction. But why? It just didn’t make sense.

But he refused to believe the headmaster had thrown him to the wolves. Professor Amethyst had always, always been his biggest supporter, his greatest confidant. He had to have had a really good reason to reveal his location to his nemesis and open a portal that would lead him right here.

And what of Chris? When they’d met before, Oliver had been able to find the smallest sliver of humanity within his brother. He’d been able to appeal to the tiny bit of humanity left in Chris. But now, as he looked at his older brother, laughing maniacally, blasting black flames into the night sky, he knew all hope was lost. There was nothing human left of Chris. The transformation was complete. He was a monster. A creature of evil. He had chosen a path of which there was now no turning back.

And Oliver knew the moment Chris turned his attention back to him, he would be dead.

At that very moment, Oliver felt a surge run through him. It was the power of da Vinci, taking over his whole body, bursting through him with a force he’d never experienced yet.

He reached inside himself and tugged out his powers. And then, from his hands, came a swirling red light.

A portal! A portal! He was creating a portal!

The tiny ball of red electricity started to grow bigger until it became a small round opening of light. More of a porthole than a portal, Oliver thought. But he didn’t care how small his first ever portal was. He dove for it. As long as he fit through the narrow space and got out of there, that’s all that mattered.

As he leapt through the sky, he just had time to grasp out and grab Galileo’s small golden machine. The Cogs of the Cosmos. The machine that, for reasons he didn’t fully understand, was supposed to have huge, deadly ramifications for the universe. He couldn’t allow it to fall into Chris’s hands. At least with him, he could keep it safe. And maybe, if he survived this, he could work out what it was for.

Just as Oliver’s feet disappeared through the hole he’d created, the whole observatory exploded in a flash of bright blue light and flame. Then, with a zip, everything went silent.
