I don’t go and get my dick wet immediately. Instead, I take my time. I go to a couple of places in the city that I’ve been meaning to visit for weeks. I get a haircut, I get a massage, and I stop at this café on 5th and enjoy some lunch to myself. It’s nice to be able to slowly chew a meal, check my phone, and breathe deeply without Harper’s shrill voice cutting through the air.

It’s weird to be without her. I’ve gotten so used to her being within arm’s reach of me. I’ve gotten used to the smell of her perfume and the way she leans toward me whenever she talks. I sigh. Dammit, I don’t want to be thinking about Harper when I’ve finally gotten a break from her.

It’s time to get my dick wet. It’s time to get some uncomplicated ass—maybe even from someone hotter than Harper. I shake my head. Right now, I don’t want to think about how hot she is.

It’s a little after 5 p.m. when I finish my late lunch. The restaurant is crowded with people who headed to dinner straight after work. Work. I haven’t done anything with the firm in weeks. If I wasn’t so determined to have some fun tonight, I would swing by and check on our cases.

I slip past a couple of women in tight dresses. One of them is wearing a simple sweater and a pair of jeans, though not as tight as Harper would wear. Her eyes connect with mine for a moment, and she offers me a shy smile. She’s probably a good girl. Maybe her? I pause in the doorway. Should I turn around and see if she wants to hook up?

It feels like it’s been forever since I’ve actually approached a woman for a good fuck. It’s not like me to have to stop and think about how to approach her. Usually, things just end up happening.

The girl finally gets seated, and she’s out of my life just as quickly as she came into it. I stuff my hands in the pockets of my leather jacket and pull out my car keys. Okay, not her. I walk to the parking lot and break through a crowd of loud twentysomethings as they walk down the street toward the hipster-friendly restaurant that’s next to the café.

I get in the car and drive for a bit. I let the city lights guide me, and I ease down streets I don’t normally explore. It’s nice to have this time to think, to sort out my thoughts.

I don’t stop the car for an hour. I’m sitting at a red light, watching a young couple with their hands entwined walk across the street, when I see a sign. It’s slick and red, something meant to be mature and sexy but still eye-catching. Well, it’s caught my attention.

The car that was sitting in front of the lounge slips out of its spot. I whip my car into the space and turn off the ignition.
