CHAPTER FIFTEEN

AVERY

“Are you going to work?” Darcy asks as I fix my hair in front of the mirror.

“Yeah. Why?”

“You don’t usually dress like that for the library. You always wear those baggy t-shirts.”

“I’m mixing it up.” I look down at the fitted shirt I’m wearing. “Do you think it’s too tight?”

“No. It actually fits you. You should wear shirts like that all the time.” She walks over to me at the mirror. “Look how much better you look in that shirt compared to the ones you usually wear.”

“I guess it does look better on me,” I say, noticing I can actually see my waist and my boobs.

“When you wore that tight t-shirt at the party last weekend, guys kept checking you out. Or maybe it was because of the skirt. Braden couldn’t stop staring at you.” She smiles. “He really likes you.”

“I’m not sure if I like him or not.”

“Why wouldn’t you? He dresses well. He’s smart. And his family’s worth like a billion dollars.”

“A billion? Really?”

She shrugs. “I’m just guessing. They own all those law firms and they’re always advertising on TV so they have to be really rich.”

“I can’t imagine having that much money.”

After Wes said all that stuff about Braden’s father, I looked him up online and found out he was the opposite of what Wes described. He seems like a great guy. He goes to church, does charity work, and donates a lot of his money. One article even called him a model father and husband. Wes was lying, which shouldn’t surprise me. He just proved my point that football players lie to get what they want. For whatever reason, Wes doesn’t want me with Braden, so he made up some stupid story.

Darcy goes back to her bed and sits down. “So what don’t you like about him?”

“I’m not sure. He seems nice and he looks okay, but when we kissed, I didn’t feel anything.”

“Maybe it was just a bad kiss.”

“Yeah, maybe.”

Braden kissed me right before Darcy and I left the party. It was after midnight and I’d been drinking, trying to forget about Wes. But no matter how much I drank, I couldn’t stop thinking about what he did to me in the hall. And how it felt. Then I’d think about him walking off, back to that girl he was with, and them leaving together, and have another shot of vodka to ease the anger and hurt I was feeling. Seeing Wes leave with her shouldn’t have bothered me, but it did. What hurt the most is that he wanted me to see. He looked right at me before he left with her.

By midnight, I’d drank way too much and was ready to go home. I told Braden I was leaving and that’s when he kissed me. I almost turned away. I didn’t feel ready to kiss him, not when I was still trying to process what happened with Wes. But my curiosity got to me. I kept thinking about what Wes said, about how a guy should make me feel.
