Chapter Eight

We were halfway to our destination before Felix found a rhythm to distract him from the long days at sea.

Surprisingly, he mastered his butler training quickly. His innate intelligence greatly impressed me. But it also left him open to boredom once his training was completed, and he had read through the small library I had brought along.

By then, I had introduced him to Napoleon, who along with one of his generals had taught the lad to play chess. Within a few weeks, Felix had mastered the game and struggled to find anyone other than myself and Celine to engage him in a round. Fortunately, my young protégé found enough contentment in playing against himself, which seemed to have eased his restlessness.

Overall, my earlier confidence in turning him into a useful citizen had been rewarded, and I looked forward to seeing how he handled his new role as my butler upon reaching Saint Helena.

Meanwhile, Napoleon’s mood had also stabilized to where he and I shared war stories and brandy each evening. Even Celine was getting along well with the aristocrat wives and daughters. She had also taken up drinking ginger tea every day to stave off sea sickness.

Of course, my favorite moments with her were when she came to my bed late at night, where we created our own entertainment.

“How nice!” she said, teasingly. “I do like it when your possessiveness shines through.”

I smiled in response, not wanting to alarm her about what nearly two millennia of experience with mankind’s baser nature has taught me.

“I have something I’ve been wanting to show you since I learned of it last week,” she said, signaling she was ready to change the subject, after another group of sailors cast indiscreet glances our way. “Would you like to see what Napoleon has been allowed to bring with him for his new home? It's all stowed below.”

“What are you talking about?” I asked, having believed what Napoleon and others had told me about his destitute status. “He actually has property of value that the English haven’t confiscated?”

I’m sure the sudden look of confusion was a priceless moment. Celine nodded enthusiastically in regard to my stunned response.

“I think it’s better if you see for yourself,” she said, chuckling. “Come, I’ll show you.”

She took my hand, glancing toward the same group of sailors as we passed by them on our way to the stairs that would take us down to the ship’s lower levels. Admittedly, my heart swelled with unexpected pride when in clear view she reached up and kissed the side of my face. Despite the possible
