It had been several weeks since that first meeting in Sefton Park and the four friends now met on a regular basis.
âI always thought I was going to be like one of those birds in the aviary,â said Izzy, indicating the large building that housed the feathered creatures.
âYou still are, in a way,â said Poppy.
âYe-es,â Izzy began slowly, âonly itâs different now, because I have the two of you, and Jez, and believe me, thatâs given me more freedom than Iâve ever had.â
The sun beat down on the three girls as they made their way to the lake, and Cadi couldnât help but notice that Izzy was wearing a cardigan. âArenât you hot?â Seeing the hunted look shrouding Izzyâs face, she sighed breathily. âOh, Izzy, please tell me heâs not been at it again?â
Izzy gave a small nod. âI canât remember a week going by without my dad giving me a clout for one reason or another.â
Cadi linked arms with Izzy. âThis is getting silly. You shouldnât have to live like this, not now youâve got us. Youâve really got to get away from him, Izzy.â
Izzy heaved a sigh. âI know, but Iâm still not ready.â
âWhat on earth are you waiting for?â said Cadi, adding desperately, âAnother scar like that one?â
âNo,â said Izzy. She covered the scar with her hand. âThat was a mistake â he didnât mean to go that far.â
âTosh!â snapped Cadi. âYou donât give someone a scar like that by accident. I bet he never even apologised.â
Izzy eyed her friends imploringly. âCanât we change the subject? I hate talking about my dad.â
Cadi tutted beneath her breath. âI donât mean to upset you, Izzy, but we canât help worrying about you, and what Ericâll do next.â
âI know and Iâm grateful for your concern, truly I am, but this is something Iâm going to have to deal with in my own time, and I canât say when that will be.â
Cadi wanted to continue, and make her friend see sense, but she knew that to do so would only make Izzy retreat further into her shell.
Squinting into the distance, Poppy grinned. The perfect change of subject was heading their way. âHere comes Jez.â She wagged a reproving finger at Cadi. âYouâre always talking about your independence, yet you and Jez might as well be joined at the hip.â
âItâs not the same as being in a proper relationship, though. If we were, Iâd feel obliged to ask him places, and weâd get bogged down in relationship etiquette. As it is, I donât have to worry about Jez getting the wrong idea if I speak to another feller, and vice versa.â She smiled with smug confidence. âItâs much better this way.â
âOnly neither of you do that anyway,â Poppy pointed out, âbut I suppose if it makes you feel better â¦â
âIt does,â said Cadi. âRight now, Iâm happy being friends.â
Jez called over to the girls as he approached. âAfternoon, ladies. Howâs tricks?â
âSame old,â said Cadi. âYou?â
Beaming fit to burst, Jez ran his fingers through his hair.
