âName?â
âAbel Beer.â
âDomicile?â
âDo what?â
This morning was not going well for Daddy Bliss. George Crossland had come down with something; Bliss could hardly expose the public to Constable Brandon. So, here he was, having to do his own paperwork. âWhere do you live?â
âUplyne,â Beer told him.
âWhereâs that?â
âDorset.â
The inspector leaned back in his chair. Heâd lost count of the ghouls who had crept out of their hidey-holes since womenâs parts had begun turning up along the Thames. He had predicted all this, of course, but that didnât do much for his temper. âSuppose you tell me the reason for your visit,â he said.
âMy sister Mary has gone missing,â Beer said. âI havenât seen her since early August.â
âThis was in Uplyne?â
âNo, here in London.â
âWhere, precisely?â Bliss needed to know.
âI left her lodging with Mrs Christian in South Street, Battersea.â
âAnd what does your sister do for a living, Mr Beer?â Bliss was still going through the motions.
âNothing,â Beer said. âSheâs in London to settle her affairs.â
âAffairs?â That was a word that could easily be misconstrued in Daddy Blissâs world.
âTo see her solicitor. Sheâs about to come into some money.â
âAnd did she see said solicitor?â
âNo. Thatâs the first place I checked. He hasnât seen her.â
âSo, you last saw her in early August â¦â
âAnd I sent her a telegram â four, in fact â and never got a reply.â
Bliss was trying to place Beerâs circumstances. A manâs dress, the cut of his jib, told a lot about his status. So did his manner of speaking, but Beerâs West Country burr all but destroyed that. He was sharply dressed enough, but did he have the air of a man whose sister was about to inherit? He wasnât sure. âSo, you came to find her?â he checked.
âYes. Mrs Christian hadnât seen her. But ⦠and this worried me, Inspector; she told Mrs Christian that she had been assaulted by four men near Victoria Bridge one night.â
âDid she report it to the police?â
âMrs Christian didnât know.â
âRight,â Bliss sighed. âWell, then, weâd better have a look.â He scraped back his chair. âI have to warn you, Mr Beer, that the corpse ⦠er, the subject ⦠is not a pretty sight. The doctor has tried to reconstruct the head.â
âReconstruct?â Beer wasnât sure he had heard right.
âThe skull itself hasnât turned up,â Bliss said. âOnly the skin.â The inspector was a little unnerved to see Abel Beer cross himself. Thatâs all he needed, a bereft Papist under his feet. âThis way.â
He led the Dorset man through the labyrinthine passageways that linked Dr Kempsterâs laboratory to the mortuary. It was nearly eleven by this time and he hoped that Mrs Kempster wouldnât be much longer with his morning coffee, two lumps, please.
Bliss had done this so often that he had lost all sense of reverence. The disarticulated woman, turning less human every day, was beginning to annoy him now, if only because she wasnât providing any answers. He whipped away the shroud and Beer gasped. He wasnât looking at the head at all. âItâs her,â he gulped.
