âWalÂter MasseÂday,â the deÂposÂiÂtory clerk said conÂtemÂplaÂtively. âYes, I do reÂcall him.â
He was a spare man whose habit hung upon him like a sack, as if he took his fastÂing duÂties a bit too seÂriÂously, unÂusual in catheÂdral staff who were betÂter fed than most men. He bent over the HokeÂton acÂcounts with squintÂing eyes, holdÂing them very close to his face. He had unÂdoubtÂedly spent years peerÂing over acÂcounts in the bad light of the vault unÂder the catheÂdral, for he had but a sinÂgle canÂdle for ilÂluÂmiÂnaÂtion which flickÂered near at hand.
âHard to forÂget, an amount like that,â the clerk added, straightÂenÂing up. âDoesnât hapÂpen ofÂten.â
âAlÂmost never, I would guess,â Gilbert said.
The clerk shrugged. âIt hapÂpens someÂtimes. You would be surÂprised.â He waved beÂhind him at the inÂner vault where visÂiÂble through a padÂlocked iron grate chests could be seen linÂing the walls, stacked one on top of the other. âWe even hold deÂposits for the king, and for most of the noÂble houses in the March.â
âSo the payÂment of this debt aroused no susÂpiÂcions? It set off no alarms?â
âNot esÂpeÂcially. EvÂeryÂthing was in orÂder. Why do you ask? Is there a probÂlem?â
âWhen you say evÂeryÂthing was in orÂder, what do you mean?â
The clerk did not anÂswer this diÂrectly. InÂstead, he said to two young clerÂics seated on benches by the stone stairs leadÂing up to the choir, âRobert, Hugh, fetch the HokeÂton box.â He reÂmoved a chain from around his neck; a key danÂgled on the chain.
One of the young men unÂlocked the padÂlock and the two enÂtered the inÂner vault.
There was a great deal of thumpÂing and bangÂing and shortly the two men apÂpeared with one on each end of a chest. The way they stagÂgered with it inÂdiÂcated it was very heavy. They set the chest on the flagÂstones by the clerk and reÂturned the key.
âThere you are, Brother FerÂmin.â
FerÂmin lifted the lid and took out a batch of parchÂments. He finÂgered through and exÂtracted one leaf, which he placed on his taÂble and turned it around so that Gilbert could read it.
Gilbert could plainly see that it was a letÂter of credit made out to one WalÂter MasseÂday.
âHow can you be sure itâs not a forgery?â Gilbert asked.
âWe have ways,â FerÂmin said. He pointed to the seal. âFor one thing, the seal is genÂuine. We keep an imÂpresÂsion which I use to match against any such letÂters. And I can tell you, this seal is the same as on all HokeÂtonâs other letÂters of credit. So I had no reaÂson to doubt it. Also,â he put a finÂger on the text of the letÂter, âwe reÂquire a speÂcial phrase be inÂcluded in such letÂters. It is there. FiÂnally, I am faÂmilÂiar with the handÂwritÂing. Itâs the same as the other letÂters we have from HokeÂton.â
âWhose handÂwritÂing would that be?â Gilbert asked.
âWhy, HokeÂtonâs clerk, of course. HardÂman, HardÂbec, or someÂthing.â
âWhat can you tell me about this felÂlow, MasseÂday?â
FerÂmin stroked his lips. âYoung felÂlow, twenty-five? I donât know.
