Hello? can I please speak with Florida?â
âWho wants her?â the bloke asked.
âBert Postlethwaite, her horse trainer,â I snapped, really narked. Try to help people, all you get is aggro. âHurry, please. Her horse Benjamin has got distemper.â
Silence. âI thought only dogs got distemper.â
See? âItâs terminal, tell her.â
He clonked the receiver down, grumbling. âSome lunatic, Florida. If itâs that barmy antique dealerââ
âHello? Mr Postlethwaite, is it?â
âYes.â I heard her stifle a laugh. Iâm usually Lieutenant Carruthers of the Dragoons when I ring her, but her husband long since sussed that. âLook, love. I need geltââ âWait a moment, please, Mr Postlethwaite. Iâll get a pencil.â A door clicked, and she returned, breathy. âLovejoy. What the hell are you playing at? The police took off after you through the woods ...â
The phone ate my borrowed zlotniks.
âListen, dwoorlink, I rang you because Iâm daft about you, and want to know how to organize a gambling game.â
âDarling,â she said, all misty. âYouâre a swine.â Then, sharply, âGambling? You, Lovejoy?â
âSort of,â I said. âIt was you gave me the idea. That conversation in Francoâs restaurant, remember? And we are partners, after all. Thereâs lots of real sordid risk, dwoor-link,â I ended in a burst of genius.
She said thickly, âReal sordid risk, Lovejoy? Can I bring a friend?â
âBe my guest,â I invited grandly. âOnly, I canât quite work the odds out. Itâs not horses. I need a few quid to set it up. Could you advance meâ?â
Click. Purr. I cut the phone in the nick of time. I winked at Gussy, waiting with me. Walt Jethou was at the kerb on his machine.
âReady, steady, go!â I cracked, smiling. âCan we all get on that thing?â
âNo, Lovejoy,â Gussy said. Sheâd added more make-up, looked nineteenth century in her vast flowered hat and lace gloves. âIâll phone for a car.â
Which arrived ten minutes later, and off we drove to the abode of a middle-aged couple.
The bungalow was what Iâd call average. The antique dealers Meg and Joe Carriere, had converted their parlour into a small showroom. They were nervous, treating Gussy warily as some madwoman. Meg definitely saw Walt Jethou as somebody to avoid, all but asking him to wait outside. I began to wonder if I should have thought twice before teaming up with this rum couple, but by then we were indoors and I had to brazen it out.
âI ran into Mr Jethou at the harbour.â I was calm and proper. âHe overheard me asking the way to the nearest antique dealer, and offered to put me in touch with you. Good of you to let me call.â
Meg said eagerly, âWhat are you interested in, Mr, er ... ?â
âLovejoy,â I told her. In for a penny. âAny antique. Iâm doing a sweep of the Channel Isles. After this, Winchester, then Cornwall and Dorset. Only limited funds, mind youââ âOf course!â Meg cried quickly. âYouâve a spending limit!â âAs long as the antiques are right,â I finished for her. Antique dealers always chant this litany. Politeness, before a joust to the death.
