Gabriel puts his hand on my thigh and strokes it. I put my palms together and hide them between my knees. Even his touch, which I have craved for so long, cannot comfort me now. Taking my hand he puts it to his lips and kisses it while maneuvering the car through the cold, gray streets. He says nothing, but I know he feels my pain.

He doesn’t let go of my hand, not even when we reach our building, pressing me against him as we go upstairs. My tears have dried but my heart continues to weep.

Sounds of laughter come from Marion’s apartment, and I feel that the universe is laughing at me. I shudder and frown with nausea.

“You’re amazing,” Gabriel says the minute the door closes behind us, and his small smile tugs at my heart strings.

“I don’t feel amazing right now.” My body clings to his and I put my head on his chest.

“You must learn to accept this pain and allow yourself to celebrate your victories.” He caresses my head.

“There isn’t any victory here.” The tears return. “Only losses. They’re still here and now it seems as if they’ll stay forever.”

“No. They won’t.” He disengages from me and takes off his coat.

“Do you know something I don’t?” Tiredly, I wipe my tears.

“Many things.” He winks at me.

Marie enters the drawing room and looks questioningly at us.

“He’s in good hands.” Gabriel smiles at her and when she sighs, it seems to me that she’s aged ten years at least.

“I’ve made dinner for you and now, with your permission, I’ll return to my apartment.” She looks grief-stricken.

Gabriel helps her put her coat on and when she hugs me the current that passes between us makes my heart contract with pain. A fateful collaboration between two women who, until recently, were strangers, and who now share a terrible sadness.

“The bath water is hot,” she says to Gabriel. “You should freshen up after your long journey. And try and let Josephine rest, she didn’t sleep all night.”

He nods and opens the door for her.

I find it hard to absorb that this man really is here. With me.

“I’ll be quick.” He loosens his tie and turns into the passage. “I know you’re tired, but I’ll be glad if you’ll join me for dinner tonight.”

“Of course.” I yawn and stare at his huge back.

“I hope you’re done with your adventures for today.” He stops and looks round at me. “In about half an hour, the SS will raid some Resistance buildings.”

“What?!” I step back in alarm.

“There’s nothing to be done now,” he says firmly. “You’re lucky to be here and not wandering the streets.”

“But…I must warn my friends.” I look at the telephone and then at him.

“Josephine, it’s out of the question.” He opens his eyes warningly and walks on down the passage.

Thoughts whirl through my mind and I start walking about the drawing room in confusion. I look at the clock and then at the door and again at the clock. I hear the water in the bathroom and shake my head.
