He was ignoring them and making it quite obvious too!

Sylvie took a little glance at June, noticing that she looked distinctly pink about the cheeks as she peeked over her shoulder to where the group of gentlemen stood on the terrace. Her sister was equally conscious of the lack of warmth in the brief greeting they’d received.

Anger bubbled up in Sylvie. The Marquess of Rockingham might not like her, but he had no business turning his back on her sister! Had June not done him the great honour of asking him to be godfather to her firstborn? Had her family not recently treated him hospitably when he visited Windrush? How dare he act so high and mighty!

Sylvie looked swiftly about for William and noticed he was just seating himself with his father, Alexander Pemberton, at the whist table.

Linking arms with June, Sylvie urged her away from the double doors that led outside—where the unmannerly Marquess was grouped with some of his noisy cronies—and towards the baize-covered table at which William was seated.

‘Why do you not partner William?’ Sylvie said gaily. ‘I have just noticed that one of the young ladies I met at Almack’s is here with her mother. And I think that is her fiancé hovering close by. I must go and have a cose and see what I think of him, for she is very nice.’

In order not to seem to be deceitful, Sylvie did stop for a few moments next to Lucy Carstairs. She even cooed over her magnificent diamond ring for a second before slipping away towards the terrace.
