Chapter 30

“I received some news from the archeological dig near El Rosario, Colonel Geraldo.”

“Well what is it Captain Gomez?”

“A squad of our rangers paid a visit to the camp early this morning and during the exercise one of the expedition members was critically injured. She was pronounced dead at the doctor’s office in El Rosario. They also managed to silence the local fisherman who was helping the Americans.”

“She?” quizzed the Colonel.

“Yes Colonel, her name is Heidi Farr and she was a student from Las Vegas, Nevada.”

“Well, so be it. Did the troublemakers decide to leave now?”

“I can’t tell at this point Colonel, we have not been able to make contact with our friend in the group yet.”

“Keep me informed of the situation and let me know the minute the stubborn Americans decide to pack up and leave our country. We do not need those gringo trouble makers down here trying to prove some absurd theory about a Chinese explorer being the first to settle in Baja.”

“Totally absurd Colonel, imagine the reaction to such a wild story.”

“Yes, can you imagine the chaos that would follow if Columbus was removed as the discoverer of the New World and the Spanish were relegated to be the second foreign settlers of our country?”

“Yes, and imagine the world’s reaction to finding out that a person of the Muslim faith was the first person to spread his religion to the local people.”

“It’s too much stress on our country’s pride and stature in the world to rewrite the history books now. Get in touch with our contact in the expedition and monitor the team’s reaction to the attack as well as the mood of the group. I hope that they will be spending the next few days packing for their return to Stanford. In the meantime put the rangers unit on alert; all leaves are cancelled, start to mobilize the entire division. Call a meeting of senior officers for dinner here tonight at 0800 hours. It’s time to conduct some maneuvers in Baja.”

“Si, Colonel.”

“That will be all for now,” said the colonel.

“Hello.”

“Hello, Mr. Simone.”

“Yes, Colonel?”

“We started our operation to remove the trespassers in Punta San Carlos this morning.”

“Yes, I heard there was trouble at the site,” said Simone.

“An American student was killed in the confusion along with a native man.”

“Well, that’s not good, and it complicates things even more now,” said Simone.

“Not really, Mr. Simone. My people will handle the investigation and according to our findings, the culprits will be local bandits, just as we had warned the Americans about. You will look like a prophet and a man of reason. What does bother me is that it appears the Americans are rebuilding their camp and have called in the local police. I can handle Chief Torres, so I don’t think we have too much to worry about. I should have this mess cleaned up in time for the late summer tourist season but it will cost more now.”

“Well thanks for the update, Colonel Geraldo, I have secured the funds to pay you for your efforts.
