Chapter 7
That next morning at breakfast, I can hardly focus until I see Dazar saunter through the open doors. His outfits are always an eccentric contrast to the aristocrats surrounding him. However, today his plain black shirt seems to be eliciting more scandal than it warrants. When he turns around, I understand the reason for the appalled faces. Though the front of his shirt is modest, the back consists of a sheer material that does nothing to hide his torso.
He turns again, his face lighting up when he spots me. âAubrielle!â His smile as he says my name fills me with a warmth that turns my cheeks red. Striding towards me, he says, âI find this hilarious. Every person in this room has seen me perform in nothing but a pair of tights, yet this shirt sets them aghast!â
âWell it is an extreme contrast to their suits and cravats.â
He gives an unabashed shrug. âI suppose so.â He pops an entire berry tart in his mouth and closes his eyes. Opening them, he takes a bite of a second tart. âThis is absolutely scrumptious.â He extends the tart towards me. âYou must try a bite.â
Ignoring the whispering eyes watching us, I lean forward and take a bite. âMmmm,â I mumble, licking my lips.
Tossing the remainder into his own mouth, he exclaims, âExactly! What is life if we don't take the time to enjoy good food? On a different note,â he leans against the wall, âI had a wonderful time last night.â
My blush deepens as even more blood rushes up my neck and to my cheeks. âMe too,â I manage to squeak.
âAubrielle, you are the most amazing soul I have ever met. And I have traveled the world!â
âThank you,â I hiccup. âYou are the most intriguing man that I have ever talked to.â
âIntriguing. I like the sound of that,â he says with a wink.
âMe too.â
âAubrielle!â Sibbly interrupts as she marches up to us.
âYes?â I frown as I take in her maniac-like glee.
âI told you!â she chortles, swiveling her head between me and Dazar.
âTold me what?â
âThat he is your circus performer!â
With a jump, I glance at Dazar to see if he's offended. Much to my chagrin, he appears amused! âWhy did you feel the sudden need to announce this in the middle of breakfast?â I demand.
Instead of answering, she turns on Dazar. âIf you break her heart, I will hunt you to the end of this world.â
Unfazed by her threat, Dazar nods. âCompletely understandable. Fortunately for both of us, I have no intentions of breaking her heart.â As he says the last bit, he clasps my hand.
Satisfied for now, Sibbly flutters her fingers goodbye and zips across the room.
Turning on Dazar, I accuse, âWhy do you look as though you were expecting her to say all of that?â
Dazar slams a hand against his heart. âYou mean to tell me that she didn't inform you after cornering me in the hall and demanding I not break your heart?â
Letting my head fall into my free hand, I groan.
