TWENTY-SIX

Elena Leclair wandered the passageways of the Hall of Portraits without a semblance of direction or desire.

There were not many parts of the castle she actually enjoyed. She had been there a few times throughout her childhood, when her mother was still interested in creating alliances with other Kingdoms. The castle was beautiful—a marvel to all who came to visit the First Kingdom and pay homage to Queen Ciara and King Cian’s memory—but there was something haunted about it as well. Elena could not put her finger on it, but she always got the sense that the castle was alive. That it had a spirit. And that spirit was wracked by the current state of the world—chaos.

She had stepped out of the carriage the first time she and her mother arrived, the King and Queen of the First dressed in their traditional white garb ready to greet them. Elena and Queen Maria attempted to present a powerful front, the physical embodiment of that which made their regime so famous.

But it was the children of the First Kingdom who caught the eye of her mother.

The girl, Carinthya, as Elena later learned, exuded regality. Elena remembered her long black hair had been pinned up with diamonds, giving her the appearance of being dusted with the first snowfall. She had an intensity in her gaze that almost took Elena’s breath away. She was sharp and fierce.

That was all Elena could remember of her, even now, for she had only met her the one time before she was snatched away.

Dalton remained a part of the fiercest of memories, despite pushing away much of her childhood. He had worn white garb similar to that of his family. Atop his head was a white crown, dazzling as it was ferocious. He was as radiant as the sun was against a fresh snowfall. He was blinding—truly something, standing up with his family with a smirk on his mouth, his dark blue eyes alight with mischief.

She knew she would like him from the moment she laid eyes on him.

As she approached the foursome with caution, her mother warned her of the dynasty’s heritage with magic. The magic that plagued these lands no more, the King of the First Kingdom’s obsession with securing his magic-less regime.

“Why does he care if people have magic?” I asked my mother, too hushed for anyone to hear.

“He is bitter that he was not one of the chosen.” Mother sounded equally bitter, for she had no power either.

“How do you get chosen?”

“The Gods decide who is worthy.”

“Who was the last to be worthy?”

“King Cian of the First was the last to be worthy of such a power, but it died with him.”

“What is the power, Mama?”

“You name the course of winter and that is what route the power shall take.”

“But King Cian was not Royal,” I said, feeling proud of myself for knowing the Ten Kingdoms’ history.

“The Gods deemed him worthy. That’s all that matters.”

Elena had no idea that Dalton would be the one to control the power of the Gods.
