CHAPTER 22

HONG KONG

“That was quite the mess to clean up, JP.”

“Oui, my Lily. You of all people know that death is a messy business,” JP responds.

“I find it curious that Wei Guan would use the lab of his namesake as a venue for the information exchange. It seems too obvious. But clearly, that was the case because we found him murdered and missing a forearm. Who do you think did this?”

“It could have been Guan’s North Korean contact, but more likely, this is the work of Stone. You said the removal of the arm looked like a surgical procedure. Anyone else would have just hacked off the arm. Et, we did not expect to find both Stone and Markovic in Seoul. The information we had put Markovic in Russia and Stone under the radar. Whether they planned to meet or that occurred because of the plastic surgery is unknown. Mais, someone knew about Wei Guan and his missile designs and knew he would be here in Hong Kong,” says JP.

“JP, why the arm? Why take his forearm?”

“Lily, someone cut it off, thinking it contained something, eh, like a microchip concealed under the skin. We do not know if the missile technology plans have already fallen into the hands of the North Koreans.”

“So if the plans were on the chip, then why not just cut out the microchip? Why cut off an arm and have to carry that away?”

“You are assuming that the killer knew precisely where the chip was located. Perhaps he did not, so in haste, took the arm. Et, of course, he would also have to know which arm to take—right or left,” JP answered.

“JP, you know we need a complete forensic autopsy on that body we found in the bioengineering lab. We need to be sure it’s really our Wei Guan and whether or not there is a microchip possibly in the remaining arm.”

“Oui, that is being done as we speak,” says JP.

“Should we return to the U.S.?” I ask. “I mean, if I don’t have a target, what are we doing here?”

The crinkles around his eyes deepen. He is at a loss, shifts his weight in his seat, and thinks.

* * *

We’re back in the hotel room, working to determine our next move. I focus my brainpower, all my thoughts on the facts in front of me. It’s both a challenge and a puzzle. JP’s phone rings.

“Oui, oui, you have the body now? Did they start the autopsy?” he says into the microphone using a soft voice.

I can only hear one side of the conversation, JP’s questions. What are they saying to him?

“Et, additional DNA testing will be sent back to the U.S., je comprends. How long will that take for results? Oui, oui. What did you say? You have heard from Jackson Scott? Et, yes, I understand.”

Then I hear a long pause. I am staring right at JP as if to will him to switch to speakerphone, and then all I hear is, “Merci.”

“What? What?” I say with growing impatience.
