The Secrets is nothing if not literary. Dennys neatly divides the text into three books, and in the course of a hundred and fifty-one stanzas of ottava rima, he moves back and forth from the general to the specific, addressing everything from the moral benefits of angling to the criteria for choosing a rod-worthy branch of hazel wood. From its very first lines, The Secrets dallies with the epic mode and the tenor of early modern sermonizing:

Of Angling, and the Art thereof I sing,17

What kinde of Tooles it doth behoue to haue;

And with what pleasing bayt a man may bring

The Fish to bite within the watry waue.

A work of thankes to such as in a thing

Of harmlesse pleasure, haue regard to saue

Their dearest soules from sinne; and may intend

Of pretious time, some part thereon to spend.
