The possibility of a meeting with the victim, the format and groundrules, need to be clearly explained in simple language.
Direct meetings should take into account that some young people in particular have limited attention spans. As the length of any restorative meeting is roughly proportionate to the number of participants, consideration should be given to the number of supporters attending.
Ask the caseworker and other professionals for guidance on how to approach the offenderâs needs.
Prepare the victim so that they are aware of what to expect.
Any help to maximise the opportunities of the restorative process should be harnessed. This may rest with others in the community or colleagues from your team, and indeed with some other participants in the process. As long as these issues are dealt with sensitively, any help to achieve a good experience should be utilised. The responsibility for this lies with practitioners.
Cultural issues
Often the cultural backgrounds of victim, offender and staff are different, which might lead to miscommunication, feelings of being misunderstood, or even re-victimisation. There is also a danger of over-generalisation â there are as many differences within cultures as between cultures.
Differences between people raised or living in different cultures are often reflected in differing communication styles, including eye contact, body movements and posture, as well as variations in the use of language. Mediation will be more successful when facilitators are aware of the potential dangers and understand how differences in communication styles can lead to miscommunication, which defeats the restorative justice process.
