Chapter 42

Game Over

Waking up in a room he wasn’t familiar with, Matthew was not quite sure where he was. He surveyed the room. The walls were painted a depressing green puke, there was a beeping sound coming from a computer-like screen with a bunch of numbers and lines blinking, something was attached to his heart. The last thing he remembered was being on the field, jumping up to make that incredible catch. Then landing and feeling a throbbing pain around his knee. Then it went black. Putting everything together Matthew realized he was in the hospital. Continuing to look around, Matthew’s eyes landed on a chair. A chair currently being occupied.

“You’re finally awake! You’ve been sleeping all night and most of this morning.” Nathan stood up and lifted the pink water pitcher beside Matthew’s bed, pouring some water into a cup. “Your throat is probably very dry…here.”

“I think I popped my knee.” Matthew swung the sheet away from his body. A black brace surrounded his right knee. “Yep, I knew it from the moment I heard that popping sound.”

“A popping sound is never good.”

Matthew’s face turned intense with deep thought and concern. “Did we win?”

Nathan was surprised by the question. He thought he would ask when will his knee heal? Will he need surgery? With Matthew it was first things first—his team and teammates were his first concern; he would address his knee in due time.

“No, they lost ten to twenty-one.”

Matthew closed his eyes. “What happened?”

“Simply put, they fell apart.”

Matthew rolled his eyes. “Can you give me a little more than that?”

Just then the door to Matthew’s room opened. “That was some gruesome entertainment you provided your fans yesterday,” Jay announced as he approached the bed. Noticing Nathan’s annoyed face, he extended his hand out. “Hi, Nathan, you know I’m just joking, trying to lighten the mood.”

That’s a strange way of going about it, thought Nathan.

Looking over at the monitor, Jay said, “Your vitals look good. With the exception of tearing your ACL, you are in great physical condition.”

“Is that what happened? Will I be able to play again?”

“It’s too early to say.”

Matthew’s face grew concerned. “What does that mean?”

“It means we won’t know until we do the surgery and see what is going on there. Your records show that this knee has been injured before.”

“Yeah, in a car accident. Please, I can’t stop playing ball, football is all I know.”

“I’m sorry I can’t give you a better answer. Everyone recovers differently.”

“When can I have the surgery?”

“In two weeks. I want the swelling to go down. That allows for an easier and better recovery.” Looking over at Nathan, he said, “If you don’t mind, Nathan, I need to examine my patient. Can you give us a little privacy?” His eyes motioned over to the door.

“Sure, of course. I’ll go get some coffee from the cafeteria. Can I bring you back anything, Matthew?”

“I’m starving. I can really go for some of your stuffed cabbage.” Looking in Jay’s direction, he asked, “If
