JAKE

I stare at the number of gifts sitting on my kitchen counter and table and every single one of them seems personal. I don’t understand how this person knows so much about me and it’s starting to freak me out. I sit down in front of them and run my hands through my hair.

At first, it was kind of interesting and it felt a little good to maybe have an admirer, but as the gifts kept coming, I started to be more and more worried that there was something wrong with all of this.

Finally, I broke down and told Stacia about the rest of the gifts a few nights ago. She’s more freaked out than I am. In fact, I think she’s kind of gotten into my head.

I decide to call her again tonight to get her advice. I open my computer, launch the video conferencing app and dial her number.

“Hey babe, how you doing?” She asks.

“Oh, I’ve been better. The gifts just keep piling up, Stacia. So far, I’ve received eleven.”

“Wow, one for every day you’ve been there, huh?”

I think back and realize she’s right. “Yeah, I guess so. I don’t think I want to stay here any longer, Stacia. I’m going to try to get on a boat tomorrow and catch the first flight I can home.”

“Are you sure about that? This corporate retreat was pretty important to the company.”

“Yeah, we’ve been doing a lot of planning sessions. They are planning out the next ten years. They’ve never done a retreat this long. But I honestly can’t take this anymore. Coming home and finding gifts is one thing, but they’re filled with things from my past. It’s just too much. I just want to leave.”

“Okay, baby, whatever you want. You and me together, right?” She reminds me.

I nod. “You’re the best, Stacia. I love you so much.”

“Love you too, babe.”

“Well, then I guess I’ll see you soon,” I say to her. “Next time I’m on an island like this, you’re coming with me.”

A broad smile crosses her face. “I was hoping you’d say that,” she says, winking at me.

“I don’t want to do anything without you, Stacia. Anytime I do, it’s because I have to. I don’t have a choice.”

“I know, babe. I appreciate how hard you work for us, even when it does take you away from me.”

“Thank you. It means a lot to me to hear you say that.”

She smiles and nods at me.

I blow her a kiss goodbye and close the computer then glance at my watch.

Crap. I was supposed to meet Tim for dinner. I grab my keys and wallet and quickly head out the door.
