Before heading toward Vail, where my mom is probably anxiously waiting for me at the condo we rent when we’re in town, the team stops for dinner. The touristy section of Breckenridge has the same Old West feel as Silver Springs, just more happening. We burst into a local pizza joint like we own the place. One look at us and the hostess places us upstairs away from everyone else.

We spend the next hour reliving the highlights of the day. Max jumps on top of his chair to reenact Tommy’s biff on his easy backside rodeo. In slow motion, Max contorts his face and body, mocking Tommy’s dumb fall, eventually landing in a heap on the floor.

“Classic, Tommy,” Rachael says. “What was with Coach? I thought we were there to have fun.” She lowers her voice to a growl and gives a rockin’ impression of the man. “That the best you got? What have you slackers been doin’ all summer? Where’d you leave my all-stars? I’m going to be a laughingstock! I give up. You guys can coach yourselves!”

“And what about Lover Boy here?” hollers Tommy as he slugs my arm.

He throws a napkin on his head, tucking the pretend locks behind his ears. Batting his eyelids, he leans toward Dan.

“Jakey,” he says in a high-pitched girly voice, “you are such a stud.”

“Why thank you, little lady,” Dan answers, sounding more like John Wayne than me. He flexes his muscles. “Let me strap on my manly board and show you what I can really do.”

“Oh, Jake.”

“Oh, Sophie.”

They embrace. The group roars. I throw a breadstick at them. Bring it on. Nothing they say can get to me. Today rocked. Spending time with Sophie was great. Of course she’s cute, but there’s more to her. She’s interesting, smart, has strong beliefs, and is a little stubborn, but it all makes her intriguing. I wish I would’ve had the nerve to park the snowmobile, turn around, and kiss her right there on the mountain. But I probably would’ve scared her off.

After disturbing the peace long enough, we pay our bill and get ready to leave. As we thunder down the stairs, a guy at the bar catches my attention. Most people in the place are watching us—hard to ignore the commotion—but this guy is different. The skinny, greasy-haired dude is staring directly at me. More like, glaring at me. He’s probably in his mid-thirties and looks kind of familiar, but I can’t place him. Probably tailgated him, too. I really am trying to get better about that, but these people drive ridiculously slow. Whoever he is, he never takes his eyes off me until I’m out the door. Who cares? Nothing can ruin this day.
