After what happened at Nova, following Cara again had been a stupid thing to do.

Aaron told me that Bill, his lawyer, had told him to stay away from Cara, so she couldn’t claim he was trying to intimidate her into dropping her allegations. But at the time I figured that didn’t apply to me. I had rationalized I was doing it to protect my family, and it was mostly true. I also figured if I started following Cara around, maybe I’d have a chance at finding out something that would get her to leave us alone and withdraw her claim for sexual harassment. But truth be told, I was becoming obsessed with the woman my husband cheated with.

I’d just walked out of the grocery store when I spotted Cara heading into the hair salon across the road. Instead of going straight home after loading my groceries into the car, I sat in the car and waited. It took an hour and a half, but eventually she came out and got into her car. I followed her. I lost track of her two blocks later when I stopped at a traffic light and should have taken it as a sign to go home. It didn’t take me long to realize that if I knew where she was at all times, eventually I’d catch her with her drug dealer. At least that’s what I told myself. Our marriage counselor would’ve told me I was playing with fire, so I didn’t dare admit my new obsession during our therapy sessions because Aaron would’ve gone ballistic. And rightfully so. I was playing with fire.

I managed to follow her for a week before she caught me. It was a few days before Thanksgiving. And I still don’t know how she’d figured out what I was doing. I was being so careful. But one day it finally blew up in my face. I followed her to a coffee shop. I watched her go inside and then parked half a block away, waiting for her to emerge. She must’ve come out while I wasn’t looking because she caught me completely off guard when she yanked my passenger side car door open and slid into the seat.

“You are so pathetic!” she spat at me. “Why are you following me?”

It was the first time I’d been in close proximity to her since following her to Nova. In the daylight, I could see she kind of looked like me, at least like the woman I used to be before I got married and had kids. Is that why Aaron was so drawn to Cara? Was he missing the old me? Old me used to drive a little red Miata and my hair, nails and wardrobe were always on point. Old me was always up for an adventure or a spontaneous trip away for the weekend and was down for sex whenever and wherever. Old me was free of commitments and could come and go as I pleased. My husband couldn’t possibly have missed the old me more than I missed her.
