Chapter 34

“Did you two kiss and make up?”

Camrie ignored Jayden’s question. She walked over to the bed and asked Scott how he was doing.

“I’m good, considering I was dragged halfway down a mountain yesterday.”

“Sorry about that,” Camrie said, wishing she had refrained from asking the question. “Any idea when they’re going to let you out of here?”

Lifting up the sheet to expose his bandaged legs, he stated it might be a few days.

Camrie felt horrible. Although she couldn’t see the extent of his injuries, she imagined what they looked like. From what she could remember, they had slid over hundreds of sharp rocks on their way down the slope. Any of which could have peeled the skin off his legs.

“I heard you offered to pay my medical bills.”

“I figure it’s the least I could do,” she replied, thinking she was also going to slip him a few thousand dollars once he was out of the hospital. Just to be nice.

“Well, I appreciate it, but it won’t be necessary. The bureau said they’ll take care of it since I was technically working at the time.”

They just don’t want to owe me anything, she thought. Not that she would hold it over their heads. She had planned on paying his bills because it was her fault he got hurt.

Taking a seat next to Jayden, she asked him if he had heard from his boss.

“Yeah. He called bright and early this morning to see if I was okay. He also let me know he was sending over a new case.”

Of course he did.

“Something about a missing item near Area 51.”

Camrie looked over at Jayden who was giving her a look that said, “Don’t talk about it.”

Believing her friend might be onto something, Camrie changed the subject and asked him if there was anything he wanted.

“Yes. I want to know about this new case you two are working on.”

“We’re not working on anything yet,” Jayden said. “When we leave here, we’re going over to the historical society to see if they have information on Amelina or Daniels.”

“So you’re still planning on finding the gold.”

“Of course. But we’re not going to do anything until after you get out of here. We’re a team.”

Camrie had to hand it to the woman. She knew how to make people feel special. But one look at Scott proved he was buying into her motivational speech.

“It’s going to be a couple of weeks before I’m going to be able to do anything.”

“Then we’ll wait.” Jayden turned toward Camrie. “Isn’t that right?”

“You bet. In the meantime, you focus on getting better.”

The agent nodded, then pushed the button next to his bed, releasing more of the painkiller into his bloodstream.

Camrie was tempted to ask him if it helped, but figured it was a stupid question. The fact he kept pushing the button proved it wasn’t providing the relief he wanted.

“Are you sure there isn’t anything we can get you? A better pillow? Something to eat? A gown that covers your backside?”

He shook his head.
