Hilton
Meanwhileâ¦.
Hiltonâs heart was racing so fast he wondered if he was about to have a heart attack. He had been in his office going over his sermon for the next week when the call came. Up until that point he had been in a jovial mood, kidding around with some of the guys and just having a good time. His new pastorship was so much better than anything he had had with Endless Love. Here, his message wasnât about image or how colorful his words needed to be; it was about the truth and sharing his personal experiences with everyone around him. It felt good to be able to deliver a message that he knew was changing lives for the better and not having to worry if his words were powerful enough. The men he was preaching to were men like himself. He didnât have to put on any pretenses or even think about his performance, all he had to do was be himself, share his experiences, and be honest. It was refreshing, and he was enjoying his new role more than he had ever imagined.
He had finished his sermon for the day and was sitting in his office when the call came. It was an office he shared with several others in the organization, so he had little to no privacy like he had before, but he didnât mind. Everyone there was there to give support to each other. It was a welcome relief to know that he was now with people who werenât about âcatchingâ him in the act of sinning, but more about helping him to fight off his demons and live a wholesome life. So when his cell phone rang, he flipped it open without even looking at the caller ID. He wasnât afraid to answer his calls now, because he had nothing to hide.
âHilton here.â
âUncle Hill, itâs Cayla.â
Her voice sounded excited.
âHey, Cayla,â he said happily.
âAre you guys back from the conference yet? I didnât expect to hear from you until tonight.â
âNo. Weâre still in Chicago.â
Hilton looked at his watch.
âOh. I thought youâd be on your way to the airport by now.â
âWe should have been, but something has happened.â
âOh, did you miss your flight?â
âNo. Uncle, I think you need to come to Chicago.â
Hilton detected the anxiety in Caylaâs voice and the smile on his face slowly began to fade.
âWhat happened?â he asked cautiously.
âItâs Mia.â
Hilton could feel a tightness grow in his chest.
âWhat about Mia?â he asked warily.
âSheâs ⦠Sheâs in the hospital.â
âWhat!â
The surprise in his voice was not missed on those who were in the office with him. Everyoneâs attention was immediately centered on him and his conversation.
âWhat happened?â he asked, already reaching for his keys.
âI donât know. She was just talking, and then she completely collapsed. We had to call an ambulance when we couldnât revive her.â
âCayla,â he said, trying to measure his words carefully.
âAre you serious?â
âYes, Uncle. Iâm at the hospital now and the doctors is asking me a bunch of questions I canât answer.
