Milo met Rosieâs smile with a stern face. âHave you come to tell me to buy a jacket and a top hat?â he asked sarcastically, as Rosie arrived at his stall.
Rosie flushed. âI didnât mean to insult you, Milo, and Iâm sorry for what I said.â
âItâs me whoâs sorry, Rosie. Sorry that the way I dress offends you.â
âPlease, Milo, donât be angry with me. It was cruel and thoughtless of me, and I canât bear for us not be friends.â
Rosieâs abject expression tugged at Miloâs heart. He could tell that she was genuinely sorry and so he stepped out from behind the stall and gave her a brief hug. âLetâs forget about it,â he said.
Forgiven, Rosieâs spirits perked and she smiled winsomely up into his face.
âIâve a favour to ask,â she said sweetly.
Milo immediately looked wary. What now?
âI want you to meet Mr Threppleton,â Rosie continued. âHe asked after you and I said I would bring you to meet him. Weâre to go to the Strafford Arms at six oâclock this evening.â
Milo frowned. âWhy?â To Rosieâs disappointment he was cross again.
âBecause Mr Threppleton has been very good to me, and I told him that you were the dearest person in the world to me,â she gabbled, desperate for Milo to understand how important it was for him to meet Hildred. âI told him you were like a brother, and I want him to know what a wonderful person you are.â Rosieâs shoulders sagged as she ran out of steam. She began to beseech him again, but Milo was one step ahead.
âLike a brother, a wonderful person, and not some common gypsy whoâll lead you astray? Is that it? Is he about to check me out to make sure Iâm good enough to associate with you?â
Rosie blanched. âNo,â she cried, neither convincing herself nor Milo.
Milo turned away from her to serve a customer. âIâll think about it,â he growled. âNow let me get on with my work.â
Rosie walked away, thoroughly disheartened.
