Chapter 12

The office of Gennady Petrovich Tundrev

The city of Vaduz

The principality of Liechtenstein

THERE WERE TWO PEOPLE present in the office. A young man of about thirty, who, you might say, was in the prime of his life, was seated in his office chair, the chair of a big cheese. The man to whom he was talking was also a senior figure, but in a different agency.

“You realize that your request is totally absurd?” the man thundered. “How do you possibly envision that happening?”

“Really?” Tundrev said in surprise as he sipped away at a strong cup of coffee. “I thought it was perfectly normal. And I’m offering you good money.”

“Well, yeah… The money is all good. But they’re aristocrats, after all. And anyway, what do you need all this for?”

“Ooooohhhhhhh…” uttered Gennady, whose nickname was “Tundra,” in a prolonged manner. “You see, Sergey, you’ve started asking big questions about things that don’t concern you. Since it’s me making the request, that means it’s necessary. I’ve outlined your vested interest in all this, but I’d ask you not to poke your nose into mine.”

Sergey Valentinovich frowned. He was very fond of his friend on account of the lucrative deals he’d gotten from him, but at the same time he tried to stay away from him.

Tundra was a legendary figure in some small circles in their principality. He could make money out of thin air and always preferred doing the work himself. No one could figure out how he did it.

One night, you might get a call that you were needed to help get someone out of a precinct holding cell where they’d been detained for a drunken brawl. People would curse the air blue, but they’d go and get on with the job. It might turn out that it was just some homeless guy who’d been living on the streets for about five years. You’d be thinking, “What’s the point of this? What are they going to get out of it?” A week later, though, the news would be full of headlines about how the Dynasty of the Varionovs had found an important witness in the murder of their daughter and declared war on the Tamaevs.

There’s no telling how much money Tundra made out of that one. And not only money, but enemies too. Yet he’s still very much alive and well. The most curious thing is, though, how did he manage to find that guy?

“Can I think about it?” Sergey really didn’t want to lose his profits and get caught up in some shady business at the same time. “Just for a week.”

“No, Sergey… Tomorrow’s the deadline when everything needs to be ready by,” said Tundra, to Sergey’s disappointment.

He really wished he hadn’t found out anything about this matter, nor seen the stack of banknotes that was right in front of him. Although, he really wanted to stash it away in his pocket nonetheless.

“Okay, deal!” He sighed and then continued. “But only on the condition that you at least tell me what it is I’m getting mixed up in here.
