This eschatological event will be different from past experience when God's presence dwelt among his people (52:12, at the time of the exodus from Egypt). This future separation from unclean foreigners will not be something that they have to do in haste because of some threat or fear, as at the time of the exodus (Exod 12:11,33; Deut 16:3). God will be there reigning as King in their midst in Jerusalem (52:6-7); he will protect them just as his presence in the pillar of fire protected the Israelites in the wilderness (Exod 13:21-22; Num 10:25). J. Motyer finds these images picturing a situation in which “there will be no unwelcome pressure in the situation and nothing to distract the mind from a calm commitment to walk with God in holiness.”293 This will be a time of peace without war with God dwelling with his people in Zion (2:2-4; 4:2-6).
