CHAPTER 15

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

Emma had tried to ignore the fact that Juliana had been somewhat distant, but she couldn’t any longer. She and Juliana were too good of friends.

“Like what?” Juliana asked, clearing her throat.

“Like you… suspect me of something.”

Juliana couldn’t know. Could she? Emma supposed a public room of the house was a foolish place to make love, but Juliana was a sound sleeper and not known for roaming the house.

“Very well,” Juliana said, edging her shoulders back. “I am not pleased that you told Giles about Mrs. Stone.”

“Mrs. Stone? Oh, the animal loving lady?”

“Yes,” Juliana said, narrowing her eyes at Emma. “What else did you think I was talking about?”

“Nothing,” Emma said quickly — perhaps too quickly. “I am sorry, Jules, I really am. I didn’t want to tell him but at the time we needed to find you so desperately that there didn’t seem to be any other choice. What did he say?”

“That I am not allowed to go back.”

“Will you listen?”

“Of course not,” Juliana said, and Emma couldn’t help but return the small smile, until both of their lips widened into a grin and they were back to the friends they had always been, united against another — even if it was Giles.

“Where, ah, where is Gi—His Grace today?”

“He said something about reviewing ledgers in our father’s study that he had yet to consider,” Juliana said. “If you need him for any reason, I’m sure you could find him there.”

“I have no cause to need the duke,” Emma said, even as heat rose in her cheeks and shot down to her core at the reminder that while she may not need him, she most certainly wanted him.

Which was another problem entirely.

She didn’t see him again until dinner but did her best to ignore him until his mother began her inquisition of him.

“Are you certain this is the best decision, Giles? How much longer shall we remain here in the country as all of London wonders if we are running from the fact that you did away with your father?”

Everyone around the dinner table stilled at the duchess’ words. It had been apparent that she was agitated at being at Remington House just outside Watford when they would typically be in London in the middle of the season, which was most important this year when she had two daughters who were out on the marriage market after their father’s death and the following mourning period.

Emma, however, had had other things on her mind.

Most specifically the man sitting at the end of the table, who last night had taken her to a place that she never knew existed. The more she considered it, the more she decided that it was rather criminal that women were labelled all kinds of atrocities for enjoying such a thing while men were able to do so whenever they pleased without consequence. She could hardly see how it was fair, but then, there were many aspects of life
