Chapter 17: Fire
Joe spun around and raced back to the barn. âFollow me!â
From the shelter of the structure, the two watched as the man entered the farmhouse.
Once he had disappeared from sight, Joe breathed a sigh of relief. âI think weâve got enough hay. If we canât start a fire with what we have, I donât think weâll ever be able to start it.â He pulled out the new box of matches and, opening them, was surprised to discover it was less than a quarter full. He quickly counted them. âThe men must have used this at one time. Weâve only got ten matches.â
âWill that be enough?â Sarah asked.
âI would have liked more,â Joe admitted, âbut since the grass is pretty dry, it should only take one or two.â
As Joe prepared to light the fire, Sarah suddenly thought of something. âHadnât we better split up? If the men put out the fire before weâve had a chance to rescue the others, weâll be in trouble.â
âWeâll just have to be fast.â Joe left the barn and walked over to where the hay had been placed.
âWouldnât it be quicker if I hid near the back door before you lit the fire?â Sarah asked.
Joe frowned. âQuicker?â
Sarah nodded. âYes. We wouldnât have to wait for the men to start putting the fire out. I could go inside the farmhouse as soon as they left the building.â
âWell, yes, that would be quicker,â Joe said, âespecially since Iâm not sure how long this fire will last for. I just donât like the thought of you going inside by yourself.â
âWhat if I light the fire instead?â Sarah asked.
Joe thought about it for a moment or two. He shook his head. âNo. You might have trouble getting it alight. Plus, whoever is starting the fire will have to be ready to provide a distraction should the men attempt to re-enter the farmhouse before the others are free. I think Iâd have a better chance of success in doing that as I can run faster. Hopefully it wonât come to that, but itâs best if I stay here.â
âOkay, whatever you think is best.â Sarah looked at the farmhouse. âWhere shall we meet once Iâve rescued the others?â
âWhy donât we meet up by the wood?â Joe said. âYou know the part we tried to walk through? The place that had that dead tree stump?â
âIf you think thatâs the best planââ Sarah said.
âI do.â Joe glanced at his watch. âIâll give you five minutes to get into position.â
âOkay. Take care.â Sarah turned and walked away.
A moment later, Joe called out. âHey! Come back here!â
Sarah hurried back. âWhatâs wrong?â
âI just realized where I had seen the old man,â Joe said.
âWhere?â Sarah asked, curious.
âOn the front page of a newspaper,â Joe said.
âWhy was he on the front page?â Sarah questioned.
âIâm pretty sure he had been kidnapped,â Joe said. âAnd that ties in with the men mentioning the word kidnap. Weâll have to rescue him as well.â
âWhat? But that will take longer,â Sarah complained.
