THE BALLAD OF BILBO BAGGINS

1966 and 1967 were big years for J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien is best known for his literary works The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. He had just released a newly revised print version of The Hobbit and renewed the US copyright, thus exposing a new generation to his beloved fantasy novel. The story of a diminutive human-like creature with big furry feet whose quest for treasure takes him on an epic journey involving trolls, goblins, dragons, and, of course, a magic ring, was on its way to becoming an influencer of fashion, art, and music. The Hobbit craze was officially taking over the 1960s. Theatrical versions — some musicals, some dramas — were now being performed by high school and college students around the world. In 1966, the Beatles wanted to produce and star in a Hobbit movie. They even sold “hobbit clothing” in their short-lived Apple Boutique in Marylebone, London. Pink Floyd’s 1967 song “The Gnome” has a character, Grimble Gromble, who shares a striking similarity to Tolkien’s Bilbo Baggins. It is no wonder that Nimoy’s music producer Charles Grean decided to pen “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins” as a novelty song, first released a single and later included on the album Two Sides of Leonard Nimoy.
