NOTHING WASTED

Have you ever persevered through something and at the end looked back and thought, What was that all about? How can God have been in any of this? You feel tested and weary; you have scars from the journey, and though you may have made it through, you still have questions of why this happened to you. Well, even here we have to give God some more scope. If we hold out a little longer, we will see how nothing is wasted in God’s hands.

Going back to our story in 2 Kings, we could argue over why God would allow the woman’s son to die. Why promise the woman a son she hadn’t even asked for only for him to die and then be brought back to life? It seems to make no sense. In the same way, there are times in my journey when I have made it through the middle of a storm only to wonder what seed that storm could have ever held. So often, we write our own conclusions before God has even finished telling the story. And just as we may not see the anchor that’s holding us steady below the wave, we can forget the never-failing promises that God has for us in the storm.

In 2 Kings 8, we see God was not finished telling this woman’s story. He was working in the background. She built a life away from her own town for seven years because of a famine. Once the famine lifted, she returned home to reclaim some of her land and property. In order to make this request, she had to seek an audience with the king.

At the end of the seven years she came back from the land of the Philistines and went to appeal to the king for her house and land. The king was talking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, and had said, “Tell me about all the great things Elisha has done.” Just as Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had restored the dead to life, the woman whose son Elisha had brought back to life came to appeal to the king for her house and land.

Gehazi said, “This is the woman, my lord the king, and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life.” The king asked the woman about it, and she told him.

Then he assigned an official to her case and said to him, “Give back everything that belonged to her.” (vv. 3–6)
