FROZEN

Hirka could tell she’d put too much weight on her leg. She’d sent for Kolail in the hope that he could accompany her, but he wasn’t home. The distant sound of mayhem and drunken shouts made it easy to guess what he was up to: hiding under a hood and throwing bottles in the streets. Drinking until he could fool himself into thinking he was making a difference. Unless he had a new job. Or maybe he’d come to his senses since she’d dug the glass out of him, though she doubted it. He was wasting time.

Time she didn’t have. So she’d snuck out alone, expecting too much of her injured leg when she’d jumped down from the balcony.

She limped onward in the darkness, through the wet street stretching east from the crater down toward the sea. The rain drummed against her hood. She’d pulled it down over her face so no one would see who she was. But they looked at her anyway. Because Umpiri didn’t limp. Umpiri didn’t show weakness. They could rot for all she cared. Spend eternity in Slokna dreaming of being old, hurt, and helpless.

Like Lindri …

He was so alive in her memory. His hands, wrapped around the teapot to gauge the heat. His wrinkles, which deepened when he smiled. His hat, which was too small for him. If there were gods, she hoped they’d let him pass before the flames took him.

Hirka suppressed a sob.

Why? What was the point? Kolkagga were warriors, but Lindri …

More will die. Innocent people. People who’ve never wanted war.

She used her staff to support herself on the steep slopes down toward the sea. Toward the Seer. The accursed creature who refused to help her. Who had nothing more to tell her than how hopeless she was.

She pulled herself up the steps, one at a time, and opened the rusty door without knocking. She knew it was late, but she went in anyway, closing the door behind her and cutting off the sound of the rain.

“Seer!” Her shout was swallowed by the darkness. She stubbed her toe on the wall and swore. Why weren’t there any straight walls in this place? She continued into the hearth room. He was sitting on a stool in front of the fire. He looked like he’d been carved from stone. Part of the rock. He stood up. The flames flickered and threw sparks at the ceiling.

“Why haven’t you sent for me?” She was breaking all the rules of etiquette but couldn’t bring herself to care. Rules were trivial. Trivial things had lost all meaning. She was raw with loss.

“You said you’d send for me, and now it’s too late. The war hasn’t even started and people are dying. You were going to help. I know you took my blood. You stuck your claw in me!” She held out her hand in accusation.

The Seer hobbled toward her. The staff she’d given him was leaning against the wall. Her despair grew at the sight of him.
