Chapter 21
âYouâve got to be kidding me.â I glare at him in disbelief, the back of my throat bitter with the aftertaste of bile and fury.
How could I have been such a terrible judge of character? How could I have been so blind to marry a man who is capable of such cruelty? He played me like a fiddle, charming me in every way until I walked straight into his web.
He dips his head to the side. A smile ruffles his lips. âIâm serious. That baby youâre carrying is the source of our problems. If weâre going to start again, it has to go.â
âI wonât do it,â I say, adrenaline shooting through my veins, giving me the energy to fight back. âItâs my baby and Iâm keeping it. I thought I made that clear.â I have nothing left but my baby. I refuse to give up the only thing that gives me purpose.
âIâm not asking, Kelsey. You will do as I say.â He sucks in air through his teeth and rubs the back of his neck in frustration. âDonât you understand? You were damaged and dirty when I married you. I made you. I gave you a life. Now look at you, youâre dirty all over again. All my hard work has gone to hell.â
âWhat the hell are you talking about?â
âEverything was going well for us. I made you into a perfect wife. Every time I looked at you, I couldnât believe that you had once been polluted.â His expression contorts with disgust. âTurning a hooker into the perfect wife was meant to be my biggest achievement and I failed.â
Blood drains from my face and I stumble back, my lower back meeting the edge of the sink. âYou knew?â I whisper, but he hears every word. All this time I felt guilty for not telling him about myself and he knew?
âOf course, I did. Fooled you, didnât I?â He pauses to give the words a chance to sink into my tortured mind. âIâve always known that you were once a hooker. What I didnât know was that you are also a criminal. It makes it so much more interesting, donât you think? You were my project from the start and Iâm not someone who quits when things get hard. I intend to finish this project.â
âGo to hell.â I puff out my chest. âIâm not your project.â
âOf course, you are, sweetheart.â He takes a step closer into the room.
âDonât you dare come near me.â Iâm shaking with both fear and the worst anger I have ever felt.
He stops in the middle of the room and shoves his hands into his pockets. âThereâs something fascinating about taking something thatâs damaged beyond repair and putting it back together to create something new.â His eyes take on a faraway look as though heâs looking far into the distance. âNothing is quite as satisfying.â
His eyes meet mine again. Undiluted evil swims in the beautiful sea of green. Not too long ago, I looked into the same eyes and felt loved and alive.
