“Now what?” Dad asked once they reached the street.

“We can’t go back to our homes,” Jim informed him. “We need a hotel, but nothing fancy.”

“Take Connecticut,” Dad said. “There’s a Days Inn up near me. Not too fancy. No one should be looking for us there.”

“No one should be looking for us anywhere,” Jim said under his breath. “But they are.”

The hotel was only five miles from Dad’s house, but that was good enough. He knew the neighborhood and probably better than Magnus and his henchmen. On the way to the hotel, Veronica asked to stop at an ATM. She felt bad enough without her purse and phone. Not having any cash on her made her feel naked.

Seeing that the debit cards were from Chase Bank, Dad stopped at a branch on Connecticut on the way to the hotel. There was outside access to a double set of terminals.

Jim went with her; it was still dark, and it wasn’t wise to visit an ATM after dark in the D.C. area. Veronica stepped up to the machine and inserted one of the two cards. She typed in the standard code she and her dad used and was rewarded with access to the account. Then before withdrawing the money, she checked the balance.

“Fuck me!” she called out.

Jim heard her and came over to see what the problem was. There was no problem, only shock. The balance was two-and-a-half million dollars.

“Whoa! Your dad really did make good money working for Monroe, didn’t he?”

“He told me he got a bonus one year. I had no idea.”

She canceled the transaction and inserted the second card. It also had two-point-five million.

“That’s a lot of money to use against Monroe,” Jim said, living vicariously through Veronica’s astonishment.

“How much do you think I can take out at a time?” she asked Jim rhetorically. He had no way of knowing. He’d never tried to pull out the maximum from an ATM before.

“I don’t know. Try a couple of thousand. But with how much you have in there, you may be under a different program than the rest of us working stiffs.”

She nodded and soon had two thousand dollars in hundreds in her hand.

“Let’s try that again,” she said, treating the ATM almost like a slot machine at a casino. This time the machine wouldn’t let her have it. She cut it down to a thousand, and it gave it to her. “Okay, that’s good to know. Three thousand at a time. Looks like the rooms tonight are on me.”

“Maybe we should find someplace a little nicer than Days Inn,” Jim said half-jokingly.

Veronica grinned back. “Days Inn will be just fine. I just want to get somewhere with a shower and a bed. I know we’re racing the clock to save the world, but if I don’t get some sleep, I’m not going to be good for anything.”

“I hear that,” Jim said as they walked back to the car. “And we really do need you. It’s not like Dad and I can come up with an antidote for the end of humanity on our own.
