Chapter 42

All Emily wanted to do was to crawl into a ball in the corner of the room and hide from the world. Finally conjuring the energy to leave the comfort of the fireplace, stunned, Emily pushed open the back door. In front of her a room spanned for as far as she could see. Polished concrete and an assortment of vehicles, from small four-cylinders through to SUVs and army vehicles, were lined up on either side of the room.

Approaching, she saw Lydia pull away from Schultz, wiping her tears. Emily and Lydia both exchanged grim smiles. Lydia’s eyes were red and swollen.

“What is this place?” Emily asked, looking around.

“My playground,” Lydia said, sounding a little more upbeat. “You like?”

“That’s an understatement. It’s insane. You’ve got everything in here.” Emily walked over to a nearby work bay fully equipped with a full workshop, including drive-over hoists in the center, toolboxes along the wall, and various chromed parts lining the wall above the toolboxes. “Enough to keep your clients happy.”

“Right.” Wiping her eyes, Lydia forced a chuckle. “Now, for you, guys. Up the far end.”

Following behind, Emily took in the workshop. All the bays were set up identically.

“What’s over there?” She pointed to wall opposite them where a section was caged off, with boxes stacked behind wire mesh.

Lydia waved it off and kept walking. “That? That’s nothing. Just stock.”

About halfway down, a couple of the bays were filled with heavily tinted imported Japanese cars, all with their number plates removed.

“When these are done, these bad boys will be heading to the street races.” Lydia tapped the hood of one of the imports. “They’re getting kitted out with top of the line nitrous oxide systems and a couple of other little tricks. You know…” She looked at Emily with a dead-straight face before continuing. “If I ever tell you what we’re doing I’d have to kill you.”

Emily didn’t know how to take it until she saw Lydia with the biggest grin.

“Loosen up, girl. We’re not all bad.”

Waving it off, Emily joined Schultz at the next bay. Lydia began lowering a black SUV from the hoist. It’s badges were removed.

“Now this, boys and girls, will be your mode of transport for tonight.”

Emily walked around one side of it, inspecting it as she went around. Apart from the wider tires she couldn’t see anything different about it. It appeared to be a standard SUV.

“You don’t like?” A little Russian accent poked through Lydia's question. “This isn’t any ordinary SUV. Wait till you see what she’s hiding.” Opening the door, she said, “Hop in.”

Lydia gestured for Emily to hop in the passenger’s front seat and Emily obeyed. Her eyes widened as she leant onto the center console. Switches and dials lined the entire dash.

“Where’s the radio?” Emily asked.

“You’ll be too busy kicking ass to worry about music. In there, you do have a hand-held radio and a scanner.”

“You didn’t just have this lying around. Who was this built for?” Schultz asked.

“We’ve been liaising with the Americans on a prototype for a tactical response vehicle for them.
