They were the perfect dinner guests. You knew he was going to be a gentleman, with manners that California still didnât understand. And you also knew that there was something going on at the other end of the table, that Coral was going to be a firecracker. So they were a great combination.
In 1981 Vincent Price appeared in The Monster Club, an amiable horror anthology directed by Roy Ward Baker which also starred John Carradine, Britt Ekland and Donald Pleasence. In 1982, he was the voice on Michael Jacksonâs Thriller album and had a cameo role in Tim Burtonâs film Edward Scissorhands (1990).
He died in 1993.
Unlike many actors who were unhappy to be typecast as horror stars, Vincent Price had no such qualms. As Samuel Arkoff of AIP said, comparing Vincent with some other stars of the genre: âYou see, Vincent liked horror. It did something for him and that really wasnât true of the others.â
And when he was at that difficult age for a male lead â middleaged â he was discovered by the teenagers who flocked to horror films in the 1950s and 1960s. It was partly the camp sensibility he brought to all his films, except perhaps Witchfinder General which he played dead straight. He knew comedy and horror could work. âComedy and terror are very closely allied,â he said. âWe tried to make audiences enjoy themselves, even as they were being scared. My job as an actor is to make the unbelievable believable and the despicable delectable.â
And the last word should go to his daughter, Victoria, who said, âBy the end of his life, when many of the big stars of his own generation were forgotten, the name of Vincent Price was known and loved by moviegoers of all ages.â
