Back in her bedroom, she yanked out her suitcase from the wardrobe, threw it on to the bed – where it narrowly missed Akbar – and began hurling clothes into it, her earlier regret turning to anger.

Ten minutes later, she was done.

She closed the lid savagely, almost decapitating the curious cat, swung the case off the bed, and stormed into the living room.

Her father sat at the piano, plinking out a scale with the index finger of his right hand.

‘I’m leaving.’

‘I can see that.’

‘I’m leaving now.’

‘Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.’

She resisted the urge to heave the suitcase at him.

Pirouetting on her heel, she slammed her way out of the apartment, banged her way down the stairs, and threw the case into the back of the jeep, then stood for a moment with her hands resting on the roof, the day’s heat radiating into her palms.

A mewling sound drew her gaze downwards.

Akbar sat on his haunches by the rear tyre, staring up at her with his ghostly green eyes.

‘Good boy,’ she said, softly. ‘I knew you wouldn’t let me leave.’

The cat hissed at her, then turned and fled back the way he’d come.

She leaned against the jeep, her legs suddenly rubbery.

Looking up at the window above the shopfront, she wondered if her father was peering down at her from between the curtains.

A bicycle whizzed by, crunching over broken glass.

She closed her eyes, counted to ten, then got into the jeep and drove away.
