Lost in a daze and with a brain that wouldn’t quit spinning stories about impossible stuff, Megan tried to tiptoe up the stairs, but Ashley’s foot caught on her heel and she nearly fell flat on her face on the landing. And she hadn’t even had a single beer.

Then again, right now she didn’t need a beer to feel lightheaded and not quite in her own body.

“Shh!” Ashley whispered. “You’ll wake the whole house.”

It was one in the morning and people would wake up in three hours to do whatever was on the agenda for Saturday. Oh yeah, finishing up what hadn’t got done during the rest of the week. Luckily for her and Ashley, the boys were still on for a trip out to the walnut orchard on the hill. She had a feeling that Rebecca wouldn’t be as upset with their missing out on the chores as she might be if Samuel hadn’t been part of the group.

Megan wasn’t quite sure how she felt about seeing Ben again so soon. Happy, yes. Scared, a little. Bowled over, mostly.

Light glimmered behind Barbie’s door before Megan could get her feet under her, and the next thing she knew, there was enough light from the lantern the girl carried that Megan could shut off the flashlight app on her phone. Which was good, because it sucked up the battery life like crazy.

“What are you doing up?” Ashley whispered to her. “Go back to bed.”

“I don’t want you to fall down the stairs.” The girl lighted them into their bedroom, where she put the lamp on the dresser. “Did you have a good time?”

Ashley shrugged. “It was all right. Chalk one up for the life experience file.”

“Did you see Samuel? And Ben?”

“We rode with them. And Megan danced with Ben.”

Barbie’s eyes rounded.

“TMI, Ash.” Megan finally got a word in edgewise. She should have thought to warn her sister about zipping her lips about private things.

“But he’s much older than you!” Barbie whispered.

“It was a couple of dances, not a diamond ring,” Megan said. Why did she have to look so shocked? “What does it matter how old he is?”

“But … if he took you to the hoedown, and you danced together, are you going to be special friends now?”

The girl was so serious that Megan choked back her urge to laugh. “Special friends? Is that like boyfriend and girlfriend?”

“That’s what we call it. If a boy comes calling, and has meals with your family, and you’re of the right age, we say he’s your special friend. And then in time you might get married.”

Do not laugh. “Well, that’s not happening,” Megan said quickly, before Ash could hoot hysterically and wake everybody upstairs. “Nothing’s happening. He asked me to dance. He’s not very good at it. End of story.”

“He might not be able to dance, but you certainly had plenty to talk about,” Ashley said.

Which had been only one of the surprises of the evening.

“Did you talk with Samuel?” Clearly Barbie had her reasons for waiting up five hours past her bedtime to ambush them on the stairs.
