The next morning, as she sat at Jean-Pierre’s writing table, Sophie didn’t know she was becoming a symbol for the people of France. It would be some time before she realized this, and longer still before she saw that her fame could be put to use. Now she opened her notebook and studied the observations she had made in the air the day before.

When she had risen, at each half-a-degree fall in temperature she had drawn a profile of the clouds she had seen, and when she descended, as a check, she had made sketches at each half a degree’s increase. Now Sophie found that both times, the same cloud forms had occurred at the same temperatures. Comparing them to the shapes on Lamarck’s list, she wrote a name next to each drawing.

When she finished, she sent her chart to him by courier.
