Chapter 23

I paced the living room floor in the safe house while Drake lounged in a recliner. “This is your fault.” I stopped and pointed at him. “You got me into this. If you hadn’t forced me to go with Martina—”

“Let’s back up and review our history. The night we met at the governor’s ball, you’d already managed to get yourself into the trouble that eventually led you here. So, my dear, I suggest you turn your pretty little finger around.”

I dropped my hand. “Do you understand what Martina wants me to do? Do you comprehend the choices I’m going to be forced to make?”

Drake’s expression softened. “I do. And we should talk about that.”

“What do you mean?”

“Ben. Your mother.”

“Right. I need to make sure they meet the government’s criteria.” I resumed pacing.

“I was afraid you’d say that.”

I whirled around. “What’re you trying to say?”

“You have to evaluate them like everyone else.”

“I can’t. We’re talking about people I love.”

Drake leaned forward and rested his head in his hands. The silence ballooned between us. Why was he just sitting there? Finally, he looked up. I’d never seen such compassion in his expression before. He stood and guided me to the couch.

“I know you love them. If I were in your position, I’m not sure I could objectively evaluate the people I love. But we’re approaching this the wrong way.”

“Why?”

“I’m not good at talking about spiritual stuff, but I’m trying to do better.” He blew out a deep breath. “The whole situation with Faith knocked me off my feet and made me realize I need to quit trying to do everything my way instead of God’s.” He paused. “We’re forgetting that God’s ultimately in control of every life in that prison. Right now, he’s put you in a position to help spare the lives of certain people.”

“It’s not fair.”

The muscle in Drake’s jaw twitched. “Seems that way, doesn’t it?” He shook his head. “I keep thinking of that verse in Isaiah. ‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways—’”

“That’s something I still don’t get about God.” My throat thickened.

“But God goes on to say that his ways and thoughts are higher than ours.”

I wasn’t so sure.

“So we’re going to have to trust him to take care of the others who don’t meet the government’s criteria.”

“And that might include my mother and Ben.”

Drake took my hand and gave it a gentle squeeze.
