Edward sat pondering at his desk in the library. Everyone was acting so strangely, he thought. Sinclair asking about wills, Anna despairing that Lawrence might be starting to court a girl. He shook his head, and stood up and left the library.

He walked down the hallway and into the small parlour where he took his pipe from the mantelpiece. He filled it with tobacco and, taking the box of matches, lit it up before flinging the match into the grate. He spotted the letter Anna had burned from Lady Fitzherbert in the grate and spotted a small piece of it that had failed to burn. Curious, he reached down and picked up the scorched fragment. In small precise handwriting, it read: ‘main your closest friend and ally, Georgina’

Edward nearly choked on his pipe. Georgina! What was she doing writing to Anna after all these years?

And what did it mean? How strange to use the word ‘ally’! The half-burnt word ‘main’ obviously had to be ‘remain’. He whispered to himself: “I remain your closest friend and ally.”
